I'm sorry, this is apparently a regression from bug 311653...

This one is really a bit too visable -> ?1.8rc1

This is certainly not something worth blocking a release for, there are more important things than tooltip positioning! :) The only solution even worth considering at this point would be to back out bug 311653, and I'd argue that that bug is worse than this one.

They show where they would if the drop down was on the left edge of the screen, which is a core menu bug, which is bug 81615. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 81615 ***

Would it be possible to skip showing this tooltip for 1.5?

I'll reopen, maybe this should be worked around, but I doubt the people driving this release would consider this a blocker. Having the tooltip apply to the dropdown isn't desirable anyways, since hovering over "eBay" shouldn't show "Search Google". Easiest fix is probably to define tooltips on each menuitem so that the global one isn't inherited.

My tooltip when hovering over the google search icon says "Go forward one page" or something like that. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.2) Gecko/20060323 Firefox/1.5.0.2 ID:2006032306

This has regresses slightly in the latest trunk builds... Hover over each engine in the dropdown, you will see a tooltip ficker on the left side of the browser occasionally.

I can reproduce with latest Firefox/Trunk/Linux. Should I open new bug? Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20061202 Minefield/3.0a1

Backing out of bug 311653 didn't for trunk. I'm reopening.

This works fine for me on today's trunk build (Windows), with the exception of bug 336231. Please file another bug if you can still see this issue, bug 147670 fixed this on the trunk without the need for the bug 311653 backouts.
