Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20051006 Firefox/1.4.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20051006 Firefox/1.4.1 At random times in Firefox 1.0X and 1.5b[1-2], the basic navigation keys seem to break when typing into single line and multiple line edit fields. Left arrow, right arrow, home, end, shift-home, shift-end do nothing (I would have expected cursor movement left, right, to the beginning, to the end, and selection to the beginning and to the end respectively.) Single quote will invoke "find", much as ctrl-f would. Backspace will invoke the "back page" function. I cannot determine what triggers it, or how to stop it. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Surf. 2. Type. 3. Happened yet ? End! : Goto 1. It is as if some bizarro world accessibility mode has been turned on.
It happens to me in 1.5 on Windows XP but here is a report from November 28th, 2004 of the same thing happening on Mac. http://www.masuga.com/?p=220
Try updating to Firefox 1.5 RC1. At least one major focus bug was fixed since Firefox 1.5 Beta 2.
i have had the same problem for a while. it just happens randomly, you try to type something with an apostrophe, and the cursor will jump into the find box. also, the home/end keys stop working at the same time, as well as cut/paste. i'm using the latest version (1.5 final).
jerry, does it happen using trunk? http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/ (chaosmachine In reply to comment #3) > try to type something with an apostrophe, and the cursor will jump into the find box. this is bug 311376 / bug 320465 (In reply to comment #0) > User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b5) > Gecko/20051006 Firefox/1.4.1 > Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b5) > Gecko/20051006 Firefox/1.4.1 > > At random times in Firefox 1.0X and 1.5b[1-2], the basic navigation keys seem > to break when typing into single line and multiple line edit fields. Single quote will > invoke "find", much as ctrl-f would. see above > Backspace will invoke the "back page" function. I experienced this recently. may be Bug 158178 No doubt this bug will be duped to some other bug - just waiting to see which one will win.
Hi Wayne, I realized about a week ago, when I saw this problem again, that I hadn't seen this problem occur in a very long time. (It used to occur at least every other day.) So I suspect it's uh, mainly fixed and terribly intermittent. I will download the trunk on one of my home machines and see if I see it again.
just confirming this bug still exists in the latest official release of ff (1.5.0.4) and it's really annoying. I would say it happens to me at least once a day on average. I found a workaround on the mozillazine forums -- if you hit F1 to set the focus on a new window, the problem goes away once you bring focus back to the original brower window. I haven't tested this extensively, but it worked just now, the latest time I ran into this bug. I'm not the assignee, so I'm not going to officially change the status of this bug to "confirmed", but if there is no duplicate already out there, I think that should happen. This is a major usability issue that I'm sure turns off a huge numebr of users, so I hope it gets the prompt attention that it deserves.
Using Firefox 1.5.6 I can duplicate this nearly every time. Steps to reproduce: 1. Exit Firefox completely. 2. Go to this page: http://feeds.autoblog.com/~r/weblogsinc/autoblog/~3/21964755/ alternatively go to http://www.sirius.com/ 3. Open another instance of Firefox (run firefox.exe) (opening a new window won't reproduce this bug). 4. As soon Firefox opens again try typing "'" in a text box, Firefox will go into search mode. 90% of the time I can reproduce the bug this way. I can only make it happen with the above specified pages in the way described. I haven't been able to reproduce this with Firefox 2B2, it seems to have been fixed.
"At random times in Firefox 1.0X and 1.5b[1-2], the basic navigation keys seem to break when typing into single line and multiple line edit fields. Left arrow, right arrow, home, end, shift-home, shift-end do nothing (I would have expected cursor movement left, right, to the beginning, to the end, and selection to the beginning and to the end respectively.)" I'm seeing this in Firefox 1.5.0.7. It think it's a focus issue. It can be reproduced every time with the desktop manager "virtual dimensions". Using this to switch between desktops breaks the key-navigation in the url bar of firefox. If the about-box is opened and closed, the functionality returns. However, this only happens when the MINIMIZE method is chosen for hiding firefox in virtual dimension. Not with the default HIDE method. But the default HIDE method doesn't hide firefox properly, it shows up on all desktops. The virtual dimension code for doing this hiding is located here (If it can help to find the reason for the problem): http://virt-dimension.cvs.sourceforge.net/virt-dimension/VirtualDimension/HidingMethod.cpp?revision=1.6&view=markup
I haven't seen this in quite a long time, but it is happening again in 2.0.0.1
To be just a bit more specific, I don't believe I saw this bug at all in 2.0.0.0, which I used since it was released, and this is the first time I have seen this in 2.0.0.1. I believe I installed 2.0.0.1 when Firefox update suggested I do so. In \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox, firefox.exe is dated 12/22/2006 (along with most dlls in that directory) if that means anything.
does this sound to you like bug 264037
Yes, very similar if not the same, in fact, I had added a comment to 264037 way back when.... I am now using 2.0.0.4 and I still see this problem, but much more infrequently than I had in the past. Perhaps once or twice a month.
I have collected all of the bugs that display these symptoms under Bug 389768.
