I am using firefox-1.5rc1 with Sun Java 1.5.0_05 on PC running Fedora Core 4.  I installed the java plugin by making the symlink 

ln -s /opt/jre1.5.0_05/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox-1.5rc1/plugins

and restarting firefox.  The plugin is detected in the about:plugins page as

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_05-b05

and is enabled for all mime types.  However, when going to pages requiring java, the applets do not start.  e.g., 

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?test=1 or http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=97

There is simply an empty box where the applet should be.  

This behavior occurs with the official 1.5rc1 build downloaded from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5rc1/linux-i686/en-US/

It also occurs with a home-compiled 1.5rc1 build using the native gcc-4.0.1 compiler.  (What I'm using to report the problem)

However, java *does* work with firefox-1.0.7.

2.  Install java plugin symlink and verify in about:plugins page, as above.
3.  Attempt to load a page with a java applet, e.g., http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?test=1

Java applet should run.

I have experienced the same thing with RC1 and that page that you have identified (www.dslreports.com/speedtest).  However, Java may work at other sites and I know that it works at:  http://speedtest.adelphia.net/customerdiag/speedtest/

The actual speed test there is a Java applet.  Just what is breaking Java with RC1 at dslreports, I do not know.  I can confirm that it works with Firefox 1.0.7, as you stated.

I get the exact same thing on the dslreports.com speed tests listed below, and I'm on Windows XP, so it seems to be an OS independent issue.

The one commented as working does also, in fact, work.

Are there errors in the Java console, or stderr/stdout, when trying to load the applet it question?  Are you all using the same 1.5.0_05-b05 Java version?

(Marking rc2? because there's no final? or rc3? flag to set.)

This works for me on the Mac, with Gecko/20051025 and what _seems_ to be Java 1.4.2_09-232.  Hard to tell what version is running in the browser, versus the JVM on the system, if indeed they differ.

If Java is not recognized by the latest Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox after the installation of Java VM,

It would be saved in the registry, and Java would be recognized.

WFM with Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051107 Firefox/1.5 (current RC2 candidate) using Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_05-b05.  I was able to successfully run the dslreports speedtest: 2005-11-09 15:04:33 EST: 3947 / 328 (not bad, eh?)

There is nothing (meaningful) in stderr, except lots of instances of 
(Gecko:4435): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value has wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)

But this happens right after opening firefox, even on pages without java.

Hurrah!  I am pleased to report that things seem to be resolved in 1.5rc2.  I can now open the site in question and run the applet.  Whatever you changed, don't regress it for the final release!  :-)

Hmm, it's still broken for me, using 1.5rc2(updated via the autoupdate that was pushed).

I spoke too soon!  Today, java pages are no longer working for me in 1.5rc2 (PC Linux version, OS=Fedora Core 4), just like in 1.5rc1.  I uninstalled and reinstalled and still no joy.  Just to make sure that it wasn't the websites, I went back to 1.0.7, and the pages worked again.  

I tried home compiling the source for 1.5rc2, and that version didn't run the java either.  (But is the available source really the right one?  On first opening the home-compiled version, I get directed to the welcome page for 1.5b2, not 1.5rc2 as with the officially distributed binary.)

Anyhow, whatever the bug is, it's still there in 1.5rc2.  I can't figure out why it worked transiently, and no longer works.

Having the same issue on Windows XP SP 2.
- In Firefox 1.0.7, it all worked. Java Applets and embedded movie players showed up correctly.
- MS In Internet Explorer SP2 and in Opera 8, Java Applets and embedded movie players show up correctly 
- After upgrading to Firefox 1.5 RC1, and then to 1.5 RC 3, neither Java applets nor embedded movie players work (while they still work in other browsers).

Details about Firefox 1.5 RC3:
The applets load and start, but don't display under certain circumstances (when using different html tags to embed).
- using the html <object>... tag with <comment><embed>...</embed></comment></object> works in 1.5 RC3 and the applet shows up fine etc. All good.
- using the html <applet>...</applet>  tag does NOT work in Firefox 1.5 RC3. The applets loads and starts, but does not show up

But there's also another <applet> tag example mentioned here that seems to invalidate this theory, because the following applet works for me in Firefox 1.5 RC3 (yeah, the first page is just an image, but the speed test / progress bar shows up):

I had the same problem under Windows XP with Sun JRE1.5 and Firefox 1.5RC3. I fixed it by uninstalling Adblock. Do you have that extension enabled ? If so, that may be the problem - it seems to have a problem with Firefox 1.5.

It's the Adblock Module 0.5.2.039 .
After disabling it and restarting Firefox, everything's fine. All applets and embedded movies that worked in FF 1.0.7 work again.

Sorry, I should have provided a list of active extensions and I should have thought of that.

Adblock has several issues with Firefox 1.5 RC3. I hope they can fix it ASAP, since it's quite an essential extension.

But where to file adblock bugs? bugzilla.mozdev.org doesn't list the adblock extension, just "adblocklearner".

Please be aware that Adblock is *not* compatible with Firefox 1.5.

As a temporary workaround, use Adblock Plus (get it e.g. at the extensions mirror).

the adblock team is aware of these problems and will fix it sometime soon.

Removing the adblock extension also fixes java behavior in the Linux version of 1.5rc2.  When I had transiently gotten things to work before, it was because I had a clean ~/.mozilla directory, with no adblock.  When I reverted back to my old .mozilla directory, with adblock, things broke again.  Removing the extension fixes it again.  

I am marking this as resolved, as a duplicate of 315754.  Thanks for all the help!
