Does this also happen with latest firefox version ( http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/ ) or in the safemode ( http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/faq#troubleshooting )?
Are you using any other extensions, for example Adblock? Do you have any talkback IDs we can look at?

1. The bug occurs on Firefox 1.0.7, which is the version I have installed. 2. I tried using Firefox in safe mode. It took much longer for Firefox to crash in safe mode, but it just crashed even in safe mode.

I am now using Firefox 1.5 RC3. Due to the Extension Manager problem (see previous comment), I have not been able to install any extensions. Up until today, this version of Firefox has never crashed on me. However, it just did, and here is the error message: FIREFOX caused an invalid page fault in module NSPR4.DLL at 0167:60156889. Also, I noticed that Yahoo has just installed the text editing toolbar again today. Any further crashes and error messages will be added as comments.
(In reply to comment #9) What helped me, was DeInstalling AdBlock. I had the problem at the top of this thread-- a clone of it. Both with 1.5 and the earlier version. Touch wood: been working like a charm today at least.
I have a few Talkback IDs for this bug in Firefox 1.5. I cannot find a common theme to the cause other than Yahoo Mail. TB14583553M TB14583067Q TB14581437H TB14549868Z TB14549144Q
Could this be related to the crash on Java Applet issue? <a href="https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=311933">Bug 311933</a> I was having many problems with yahoo mail. I disabled Java and it seems much more stable. (Has not crashed so far today)

I just tried running an applet and that worked pretty well. I was doing an about:plugins and I saw this: Yahoo Application State Plugin File name: npYState.dll application/x-vnd.yahoo.applicationState Could this be something? I am going to see what happens if I disable it.

Version: 1.0 Branch → 1.5.0.x Branch
I am the person who originally reported this bug back in November. At that time, I was asked to see if it occured with Firefox 1.5 RC2. The new version of Firefox was much more stable, but for the last 4 months, I was unable to install any extensions on it. (See [Bug316808] Extension not "installed after you restart Firefox".) Last night, that second problem was finally resolved, and I was able to get my extensions back. However, since last night, Firefox has crashed three times. I now have Firefox 1.5.0.1. Here is the error message I received with the last crash: FIREFOX caused an invalid page fault in module MSVCRT.DLL at 0167:7800d16a. we don't try to do work based on the miniature crash reports, they don't have enough information easily collatable for most developers here. if you want to report a crash, please install talkback.
Whiteboard: DUPEME
I have set Firefox as my default browser. I have found that everytime I click on Yahoo Messenger's new mail icon to launch Yahoo Mail, sooner or later Firefox crashes. Probably in 50% of the cases it crashes immediately. In the other 50% it crashes within the first 10 clicks (even if on tabs other than Yahoo Mail). I have version 1.5.0.1 of the browser (when I check for updates I get a message stating there are none) and am using it on Windows XP (I know this report is for 98, but I wasn't sure if I should create another that might be considered a dupe). To narrow the problem, I uninstalled all extensions I had, but the problem remains. Unfortunately TalkBack was one of the casualties and I cannot attach talkback incidents here.
Here are Talkback incident reports: 17199457, 17002661, 16998470, 16825311, 16821957, 16804441, 16577689, 16557900, 16556424.

The following two crash reports, however, are from my own browser: <a href="http://talkback-public.mozilla.org/search/start.jsp?search=2&type=iid&id=17369403">17369403 </a><br> <a href="http://talkback-public.mozilla.org/search/start.jsp?search=2&type=iid&id=17650809">17650809</a> Firefox recently upgraded itself to 1.5.0.2, and I was able to reproduce the issue. In the comments I placed string 'agsharad' so that I can find it once it shows up in the database.

(In reply to comment #25) > that pair isn't better: ... > they kinda implicate heap corruption. but that's not very useful... timeless - the bug continues to be reproducible for me. What can we do to get more information than what talkback is collecting?
well erm. first, if you could use trunk that'd be appreciated (i guess that's MineField). third, perhaps if you could use http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_with_WinDbg the problem is that you're crashing all over the place, which really means we need someone to create a simplified testcase and feed it to purify or an equivalent. as a reminder to myself and others, comment 23 Incident ID: 16825311 indicates a plugin was running around a bit. *second* (yes this is out of order, but...) 1. load about:config, type path into the text field. you should see plugin.expose_full_path. double click that (to change it to true) 2. load about:plugins 3. copy that output here 4. go back to about:config and change the pref back to false. then disable *all* plugins. see if you crash with all plugins disabled. if you don't, then try narrowing it down to a single plugin. if you can, that'd be great. (either way, please comment back indicating what you find.)
Followed directions as timeless listed them: 1. load about:config, type path into the text field. you should see plugin.expose_full_path. double click that (to change it to true) 2. load about:plugins 3. copy that output here 4. go back to about:config and change the pref back to false.
I just found out that these crashes can occur while writing a blog in Yahoo 360 in the same way that they can occur in Yahoo mail.
Yahoo Application State Plugin File name: C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Shared\npYState.dll MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled application/x-vnd.yahoo.applicationState Yes is by far the most interesting. can you browse to that file, use file>properties from explorer and copy all the version information for all the fields availble?

Found a pluginreg.dat file, but it is generated, so don't want to manually edit it. The other information I found was for uninstalling plugins rather than disabling them: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/uninstall.html Can I just move the relevant files out of the Plugin Location?: C:\Documents and Settings\[Windows Login Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Plugins\
unless we actively search for the plugin or something actively regenerates it, it's sufficient to rename the file to *.dul instead of *.dll. if the plugin is getting regenerated, make a directory with the name the plugin wants to use and it should stop appearing (most apps don't deal w/ that fun edge case). for plugins where we actively search,, there are prefs to disabl it, and this plugin is definitely not one we'd be searching for.

Bingo! We have a culprit. Renaming npYState.dll to npYState.dul resolves the issue. No more crashes so far!!
the closest i can find is bug 322363 which kinda looks like a fishing expedition.

According to http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/changelog-0.7.html, these crashes frequently involve adblock. Are some people seeing npYState.dll cause crashes *without* having adblock installed?

Are some people seeing npYState.dll cause crashes > *without* having adblock installed? > Yes. As part of my initial troubleshooting I had uninstalled ALL extensions I had (naively, I had also uninstalled Talkback). The crashes remained. Then I re-installed my extensions. 'timeless' helped me identify npYState.dll. Renaming it removed the problem.

As a matter of fact, I had to go to the mozdev website just now just to see whar AdBlock was!
