I've just been hit by this issue.
I clicked on a new message in Thunderbird and up came the body in the preview pane. Then I clicked on the next messgage, and - nothing. I then clicked back on the previous message (which I just viewed successfully) and it re-appeared as it should. Then I clicked again on the one that failed - and this time I saw the body of the previous message!
Doing a View Source brought up an empty pane. Clicking on other new message also failed - showing the body of the last one successfully viewed.
I am using Courier-IMAP, but have MAXPERIP=100, and doing a "ps" on the IMAP server showed <20 connections IN TOTAL open - so it's not a congestion issue as other bug reports I've seen on this have been.
I then entered other folders - thunderbird reported connecting->downloading->etc and they viewed fine. Going back to the folder that was "broken" didn't fix the problem
I then went offline (don't download) and online. Didn't fix the problem
I then exited thunderbird and restarted it. Problem solved.
Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce
It happens sometimes on Windows2k, too... and sometimes while saving attachement, they have 0 size. Repeated action corrects the problem, but it happens quite often.

i do have the exact problems as described in the original bugreport.

this doesn't fix my problem. closing and restarting thunderbird doesn't let me see the mail.

No response from reporter, so => WFM. Please reopen if you see this problem in TB 2.
