Invited for security reasons to update Firefox.. I did so then realised I had lost all my valuable bookmarks

Reproducible: Always

Are you sure you are not using a new profile?
When you click your Windows Start button and type in the Run box %appdata% how many profiles do you see in the folder Mozilla?
The latest Firefox versions make daily backups of your bookmarks BTW. 
In 1.0.7 you need to do this manually.

There is only the default profile, no others.
