Thunderbird displays "Re:" in the subject pane when the message actually contains "RE:". This issue is not about threading, just that Thunderbird is changing the case of the subject line. Trivial, but we shouldn't be changing a user's message at all.

intentional?
Assignee: mscott → nobody
Severity: minor → trivial
Summary: Thunderbird changes case of subject → Thunderbird changes case - displays RE: as Re: in subject

Internally the "Re: "/"RE: "s are stripped from subjects, and we add back "Re:" at display time for the thread pane.
In the message pane the original source is used to there you can see the original case.

intentional. we could try to match the case of what people send but then people would wonder why it's one case sometimes and one case other times. At least with our current implementation it's always a single view; despite slightly altering what was sent.

I think this qualifies as the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on Bugzilla. What do you mean "try and match"? Is it do difficult to resist fiddling with the content of a message that you have to "try" not to? As for users being confused about the case actually matching what they typed, why stop there? We could just change the case of everything to uppercase so no one will be confused about why the beginning of sentences, proper nouns, acronyms, and other words have a different case than other words. It must be frightfully confusing.

So just what part of this bug was INVALID ?
This unnecessary and INVALID messing with the messages content IS a bug and had serious side-effects.
Bug 403912
If this could was anticipated , it is probably why not messing with message content should be a basic tenant of an email client.
This whole idea of "stripping off" parts of the subject (or anything else) needs to be addressed, eg stop doing it.
regards.
