1. login as root
2. start firefox and perform update via Extras menu
3. start firefox as normal user

Expected Results:

Could you please provide some more information.
Did you restart Firefox after downloading the update as root ? Are you sure that the root instance of Firefox exited before trying to start as a normal user ?

I closed the Firefox window as root. I did not look, if the process has terminated or not. So I don't know for sure, that it shut down completely. But all the windows were closed before starting it again as normal user.

One detail that migth be important: I did not login as root and startet Firefox, I startet it with sudo as normal user.

Which Linux distribution are you using? Are you using a distribution-specific build of Firefox, or the official Mozilla build?

I use Mandrake 10.1 and the official Firefox build from the Firefox-Homepage. All partitions are formatted with reiserfs, if this could be relevant (but I don't think so).

OK. It's a bit of a large request, but could you install Firefox 1.0.x again, build up some profile data (i.e. bookmarks) and try to upgrade again, to see if it's reproduceable?

Do you really mean 1.0.x? The problem occured while upgrading vorm 1.5 to 1.5.0.1

Oh, no I don't. I mean 1.5.0 to 1.5.0.1. Sorry; my mistake. :-(

I could not reproduce this behavior, but I found out some strange behaviour, which maybe could help:
I have 3 users on the computer: root, peter and bianca . Firefox is /opt/firefox /firefox. I installed 1.5 as /opt/testing/firefox for this test as root. Firefox from /opt/firefox still running in Background as peter. Then I started the Testing-Firefox as bianca (that user never started Firefox before) and got a Firefox with default-Settings and Bookmarks. Good, but...
Then I shut it down and started the Test-Firefox as root (from a console window where I became root with "su"). Surprising it did not start a second Firefox Program this time, but a new Window of the running /opt/firefox/firefox which is running as peter.
So it looks like Firefox is NOT really started as root when I start it from a console window as root user. Maybe this could be the reason, that I got the settings and bookmarks from root as peter-user one month ago? I did the update as root from console...
