To run Oracle Apps on a browser, we need it to be compatible with the Jinitiator plugin. I am not able to run my Oracle apps. I have Jinitiator installed and it does not work with firefox! It works fine with IE. I want it to work with Firefox.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.You need access to Oracle apps
2.Login and select a responsibility assigned to the user you logged in as.
3.Click on one of the links.
4.It says "Missing Plugin"!
Actual Results:
Just says missing plugin and when I try to search for a plugin, it says no plugin found.
Expected Results:
Another window should've opened with the title "Oracle Applications 11i" and then another window with actuall access to the Apps.
This is a major feature required for all the Oracle users. You will not be able to get them to join the Firefox community. And the Oracle community is very big. So you do want them to start using Firefox.

What version of oracle apps / jinitiator are you using? I might be able to test this tomorrow.

Hmm... The attached HTML doesn't reference any plug-ins... Probably hiding somewhere in the scripts, etc. :(
I'll give the details of Apps and Jinitiator tomorrow from office.

The Apps version is-
Oracle Applications : 11.5.10.2
Jinitiator version is-
Oracle Jinitiator 1.3.1.18
Default Virtual Machine version - 1.3.1_04-b02
Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.3.1.18-internal
Let me know if you need further details...

I've tried two things:
a) Firefox 1.5.0.1 with no JInitiator installed
b) Firefox 1.5.0.1 with JInitiator 1.3.1.25 installed
For a)
Clicking on a link that should pop up a window prompting me to download the plugin from the relevant Oracle Apps tier does not happen
For b)
Clicking on a link does fire up the relevant Java window within Oracle Apps
Couple of questions:
1/ Did you install Firefox from an .exe or was it a zip from a branch?
2/ If you look in the plugins folder is there a NPJinit13118.dll file?

Also make sure you have read metalink note: 285218.1

I don't remember if I installed from an exe or zip file.
AS for the dll file, no, its not there in the plugins folder. the dll files in there are npnul32 and npswf32.
i am looking into the metalink document now.

The fact there is no .dll file for JInitiator suggests it was a zip. The JInitiator install probably looks for registry entries which only the .exe adds to know it has to install the .dll into the Firefox plugins directory, so the .dll has to be manually copied from the JInitiator bin directory in Program Files into the plugins directory.
Now it could be argued that Firefox should check for the relevant registry entries when starting up and add them if they're not there, but that is probably another bug.

I installed 1.3.1.25.
but still the problem persists. installing this version of jinitiator has put that dll you mentioned in the plugins directory of mozilla automatically. but still it isnt working... i tried disabling java as suggested in the metalink article but even that didnt work! i uninstalled the earlier version of jinitiator too but it was of no use. IE doesnt recognise this new version of jinitiator either now! its asking to install the 1.3.1.18 version.
what do i do?

If your Oracle Apps are configured for 1.3.1.18 then use that not 1.3.1.25, 1.3.1.25 is just version my Oracle Apps use. So make sure you un-install 1.3.1.25 and install 1.3.1.18 then check which .dll is in Firefox's plugins directory.

ok. when i disable java and try now it works. but i have to disable java everytime to access apps...
this isnt a solution but just a compromise.
who is the authorised person who can make this an official bug?
apps works fine with IE. so whats the problem here? why is it unable to detect the right one between java and jinitiator?
do i even need to keep java enabled for the rest of the sites?

No, you don't click on that link. From looking at your task bar, it looks like it has already opened a java window with apps in for you.

If java enabled in firefox than for a first Oracle JInitiator icon will be appeared... You will see loading of applet, but after some time Sun JRE icon will be appeared and firefox crash after it.

The JInitiator plugin only deals with:
application/x-jinit-applet
application/x-jinit-bean
The Sun Java plugin deals with:
application/x-java-applet
application/x-java-bean
So as long as the code only tries to use the x-jinit-* types it should not matter whether the sun java is enabled.
In reference to comment#25 looking at the list of open windows, there is a jinitiator application window open - shows as "Oracle App..."

just use IE tabs extension and switch to IE rendering when you want to access apps.

That is no solution. Firefox does work with Oracle Apps as I have used both 1.0.x and 1.5.0.x releases without a problem. I also test on both trunk and 1.8 branch in Firefox and SeaMonkey but have not come across this issue.

ok. well, not all people are familiar with the techincal jargon that you mentioned. for us common people, it is better to have a tool that solves the issue than to try to get into configuring something that we are not familiar with and might end up messing it up vey badly...
if you can give us the walk through on how to get it to work normally, we also can follow you.
otherwise we will just have to use the IE tabs extension...

Hi,
though I am wondering how I got here ;-) , I must put stress on the point, that Oracles Jinitiator 1.3xx and one of the Sun JVMs must be run parallel (better sequential) within the Firefoxbrowsers (1.07/1.504) of our company.
That means: We are very interested in a solution which is similar to the "netscape" behavior some years ago, in which Oracles Jinitiator was started (as a separate JVM) by a config-file whenever needed and starting a different URL using another JVM worked without problems.
What I figured out so far is, that the Jinitiator works and can start an Oracle Applet. (Firef.1.504 Sun 1.5)
But, if you try to start another Applet which is not "understanding" the Jinitiator dialect thereafter, the browser hangs an says something like "JVM Violation" because it stills tries to use the Jinitiator instead of the SunJVM.
Couldn't find anything about that at the Oracle support sites
Hope you can give me a hint.
Thanks & Greetings
