I think this is because customization on the new toolbar is broken: bug 328299

not a dupe of that bug. My bookmarks toolbar is just plain empty all the time!

I guess deleting localstore.rdf has the same effect as VIEW - TOOLBAR - CUSTOMIZE - RESTORE DEFAULT SET and restart firefox.
That solved the problem for me, apart from retaining the customized icons.

Yup, confirmed Linux x86. Problem was first seen in my build of 20060302. Is fine in 20060301.

rename the bookmarks bar toolbaritem to what it was before, for compatibility with existing localstores.

Is it at all related that if you try to use the "Star On" way of bookmarking, the bookmarks toolbar disappears again?

Placing the button from the customize window on the toolbar can cause Bug 328299.

Is this really fixed? This is still broken for me in the latest Mac OS X nightly (20060304-06). I see nothing in the Bookmarks/Places Toolbar at all. Maybe my profile has been too badly corrupted by the in-between builds to be converted properly now?

Maybe you should try deleting localstore.rdf for the last time, as there is no compatibility anymore with the yesterday's places builds.

That worked. Thanks! It must only be profiles that were "corrupted" over the last short while. I tested with a January profile to be sure and that worked fine as well.

Since this morning all of my bookmarks dissappeared. I only see "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder Empty." I use Windows 2000 and Mozilla Firefox and am wondering how I can recover my bookmarks.

Which build are you using? This bug is only on trunk builds. If you are using a release build, that isn't this bug. You can check your profile directory, depending on the version, there are bookmark backups there.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".
In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.
Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.

Component: Places → Bookmarks & History
