It would be a good thing to decouple new mail notification from actually checking for new mail and downloading the headers. I have lots of mailing lists for which I don't want to be notified when there is new mail, but when I check my mail because I got a personal e-mail I want to *see* how many mails there are in there. So I want do enable "Check for new messages", but I *don't* want to get a new mail notification for every LKML messages that comes in. Note that I use an IMAP server, and I do my mail sorting for mailing lists server-side, so I have a situation in which Thunderbird won't actually notice the messages at all if I don't enable "Check for new messages".

Related to Suite bug 224573?

In a way it's related to suite bug 224573 (also occurs in thunderbird BTW), but that's for stuff that thunderbird puts into folders *itself*, it's basically a real bug. What I need is a "don't notify" flag, not a "don't notify if you've been so stupid that you've forgotten that the user just put this message here herself". :-)

i'm shocked there are no duplicates to this - which means either people aren't finding this bug, or they are duping to some other bug.

comment 0 is somewhat unclear to me. For example, does reporter mean alerts should happen only if *Inbox* has new mail?
We have many notification bugs to cover many situations (including my speculation above), so I propose to close this unless we have clarification from the reporter.
