i solved the problem. it was not the address book but it was the prefs.js... i had imported many addresses from outlook express address book some month ago... i have checked now and the prefs.js was bigger than 1MB!!!
it was full of calls to LDAP non_ascii mab files, removing all the ldap calls the file size was reduced to 9KB and now the address book opens instantly!
i have already the old prefs.js if you're interested

problem is here again, not solved
my steps:
- close thunderbird, remove all ldap non-ascii.mdb references in it (prefs.js was about 900KB)
- now cleaned prefs.js is 10KB
- restart thunderbird
- close thunderbird, prefs.js is 10KB, yet
- restart thunderbird
- open address book
- close thunderbird
- prefs.js is now about 27KB
and so on it continously grow up...

Now I've seen the prefs.js, I can say for sure that this is the same problem as per bug 230580. Its just in this case you seem to have got an extreme amount of redundant prefs.
