Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060127 SeaMonkey/1.0

SeaMonkey 1.0
Mac OS 10.5.4 mostly G5s with a few G4s.
Gigabit Switching to machines, 100 to printers.
HP LaserJet 8150 printers (we have 2, problem on both)
HP JetDirect J4169A print server cards installed. (Current firmware installed.)
Printers set up via the Printer Setup Utility using the HP Socket / JetDirect choice.
Printers have 96 mb of ram installed.

We're seeing a strange on here. When printing some web pages (and maybe html emails) to our networked printers we can error out the printers unless we turn off print background colors and print background images. Not sure at this time if both need to be turned off as I'm not sure what causes the issue.

This web page will cause the error:
http://aldersgate.org/history.htm
Printer Console shows Error 79.00FE which is a power cycle the printer and call HP service if it keeps happening. But it only happens with SM 1.0. Before installing this we didn't see this at all.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Visit http://aldersgate.org/history.htm
2.Print to an HP LJ 8150 setup via the HP Socket/JetDirect option
3.Do NOT turn off background images or colors.

Actual Results:
Print never finished out of the local computer print Queue and printer displays an error 79.00FE.

Expected Results:
Print the web page.

This is happening with a LOT of web sites. Not just the example shown above. This is just one of the one which appears to be not too complex in terms of layout.
More Details:
If you select Apple's built in option to create a PDF file, the PDF file will generate the error in the printer.

The following additional combinations have the error.
SM 1.0 OSX 10.4.6
SM 1.0.1 (4/4/06 nightly) OSX 10.4.6

The error does not occur when printing from:
SM 1.0 on WinXP all patches up through a few days ago.
To either the networked 8150 or a locally attached 1012.

I tried to test SM 1.5.a (4/4/06 nightly) OSX 10.4.6 but it has trouble with printing in general. Page Setup is ignored (nothing happens) and Print generates an "unknown" error.
Duplicate of/related to Core bug 313062 (Error 79.00FE <> Error 79.01FE)?
In mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey, you wrote "[this bug] showed up after moving from Moz 1.7.12 to SM 1.0.".

Now, what you could do, if you have time, is to test the intermediate releases (like Mozilla v1.8b1), to try and narrow the regression timeframe.

The HP service docs refers to all 79.xxxx errors as being the same category. So I'm thinking this is the same problem.

As a wild guess, I would suggest:
*"Fix bug 295737: use Core Graphics to do image tiling, because it's much faster than doing it ourselves.", which seems to be MAC specific !
*"Bug 289377, cleanup nsCSSFrameConstructor a tad.", in case CSS is involved in the images/colors handling ?

Marking bug 313062 as dependent for the time being.

David, do you still see this problem with a latest Firefox Trunk Build ?
I'll try and check it out this weekend.

David, do you had a chance to test this ?
I am seeing similar behavior with two non-HP printers, a Sharp AR-M450N copier and a Brother 5170N. I don't get the error, just error out of the printers, and it occurs with all stable versions of Seamonkey. Turning off background images or colors has helped. Interestingly, Mozilla 1.7 or earlier still works fine for the offending web pages or html mail. Also, our HP printers are unaffected (so far). We have a 2430 Laserjet 2430 and a 1320).
still see this problem when using FF 3.0, or 3.1?

Is this still an issue in Firefox 3.5?

If it is not, we should set the resolution of the bug to WORKSFORME.

Is this still an issue ?
Flags: needinfo?(moz)
We no longer have those printers and I gave up on this being fixed ages ago.
Flags: needinfo?(moz)
We are unable to track this down and that the printer hangs is a printer bug.

marking incomplete but thanks for your response !
