At this point, I'm starting to want to file bugs under Windows Vista (especially theme stuff), but there's currently no OS option for it.

Vista isn't the name of the os. historically we haven't added these things until after they ship with the right name. if we do it earlier, we screw up.
we'll get to this.
marcia: please don't fix this until after ms annouces the official name.
joe: use a meta bug and dependencies, file the bugs w/ consistently w/ os wXP or w2k3svr (pick one, i don't care, just have everyone be consistent).
this bug shouldn't be reopened until an official name for the os has been announced by ms.
(we could call it windows nt 6.0 in our database but that'd confuse people.)
further, if you're going to file this request, please include useragents for apps that run on it so that we can arrange to do decent sniffing when it does get added.

OK, makes sense. I'll be filing Vista bugs under "Windows XP" in the interim.

Here are user agents for Bon Echo nightly and the current Vista IE7, respectively:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20060410
Firefox/2.0a1
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; MSDigitalLocker
Vista 1.3; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0)

Actually, I believe Vista is the official name of the OS. It was announced last year, iirc. "Longhorn" is probably the unofficial name you're thinking of.

Need to know where to place it in the list, I assume after Windows XP?

I'd suggest after Windows Server 2003, actually, since I believe there will be server versions of the OS.
This order would make the most sense to me (note the NT/2000 switch):
Windows ME
Windows NT
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Server 2003
Windows Vista
Windows CE

Last time I added something to the Windows list, I remember timeless had strong feelings about the order. adding him to the bug for any comments he might have...
i'm qa, and i can't notice cc mails, if someone needs to flag me, they'll need to forward a bugmail to my gmail account.
I've added the item, as http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ indeed indicates it's the official version. however, we now need some browser sniffing.
I suppose that the autodetection belongs in another bug, although this stuff gets really very very messy. I need to talk to justdave.
