User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060313 Fedora/1.5.0.1-9 Firefox/1.5.0.1 pango-text Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060313 Fedora/1.5.0.1-9 Firefox/1.5.0.1 pango-text I am using Thunderbird version 1.5 (20060313) running on Linux and I also use Thunderbird version 1.5.0.2 (20060308). Both Versions behave similar in this case. Both Systems are running on 32-Bit Intel Platforms. I am using two different courier-imap IMAP Mailservers. If special files are attached in an email (for example a file like this: http://www.hardwarepreise.com/downloads/test.gym ) thunderbird hangs or crashes if it tries to display the attachment inline. The file is a simulation file of a software called "Ganymede". I can reproduce the crash with any of our ".gym"-Files. If I turn off the Feature "display attachments inliune" it works perfect. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Send an email with this file: http://www.hardwarepreise.com/downloads/test.gym attached to yourself 2. enable the Option "View->Display attachments inline" (enabled by default) 3. try to open the message ;-) Actual Results: Thunderbird hangs vor a long time and afterwards sometimes reports a Timeout or it crashes completely. Expected Results: The Software should have either not Display this (i suppose) unknown filetype or display it correctly.
Are you using the Fedora Thunderbird package or an official build that you downloaded from mozilla.org?
(In reply to comment #1) > Are you using the Fedora Thunderbird package or an official build that you > downloaded from mozilla.org? > I am using the Package supplied by Fedora. [florian@imst1015 ~]$ rpm -q thunderbird thunderbird-1.5-6 But on Windows it is the latest Version from mozilla.com (downloaded yesterday).
Florian, do you still see this problem on windows?
Version: unspecified → 1.5
(In reply to comment #3) > Florian, do you still see this problem on windows? > Hello Wayne, sorry for the late reply. I tested on Windows again right now (Version 1.5.0.10 (20070221)) an i still see the problem.

I have the problem (Thunderbird hangs when viewing a message with large attachment if "Display attachments inline" is enabled) on Windows with Thunderbird 2.0.0. I think that Thunderbird should process the attachment in a separate thread (meanwhile displaying a text in the message area suggesting to wait or turn off attachment inlining) so that the user would still have control over the progam (use the menu, view a different message etc.). Or an easier but less elegant fix would be to put a size limit on the attachments that are displayed inline. Obviously, the code of the message viewing component can also be optimized so that it would use less CPU and thus could display larger messages - a 1 MB text file (like the test.gym file mentioned above) is not that large... Fortunately, one can always disable "Display attachments inline", so this bug is not too annoying (once one has learned by trial-and-error that "Display attachments inline" is the cause why Thunderbird hangs with some messages).
need a talkbackid from a branch build (v2 or 1.5) or breakpadid from a trunk crash http://kb.mozillazine.org/talkback http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad
I don't see crash or timeout so this may not be the exact same problem but, using a local folder: 1. save http://www.hardwarepreise.com/downloads/test.gym as .txt or .gym 2. attached file to new message 3. save as draft to local folders 4. open message in drafts with "view inline" Within a few seconds thunderbird window goes to "Not responding". Same files load fine in firefox with no performance issue. version 1 and version 3.0a1pre (2008021703), so version => unspec could be a dupe of an already filed performance bug - hard to say without a profile. layout?

can you reproduce with version 3?
Whilst googling about a different problem, I noticed some people reported a similar problem (apparent lock-up on *any* messages with attachments). They said it happens if (somehow) TB's mimeTypes.rdf file becomes 100MB or more in size. You might check how big your mimeTypes.rdf file is and let the developers know. Apologies if this possibility is already well known.
