Pages fail to render on Mac builds of Mozilla

I have had this problem on every Mac build of Mozilla I have ever tried (approx
M10 to last night's tip build):
Pages on my local server will load and render properly. Pages that must be
fetched from the network will load and render partially, stopping at seemingly
random points. mozilla.org, for example *always* stops loading after the banner
and a portion of the left-hand nav table renders.
Trying reload sometimes results in getting more of the page, sometimes it
doesn't do anything.
I have had this problem under OS 8.5, 8.6 and now 9.
The machine in question is behind a linux ipmasqing server which is connected to
the internet via a 33.6kbps modem (yeah, laugh it up). The same server runs a
squid caching proxy, but i've turned that on and off to no effect. Linux builds
work perfectly on the same LAN as the Mac is on.
Sounds like a networking problem and not a layout problem
