Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.3) Gecko/20060426 Firefox/1.5.0.3
Build Identifier: TB version 1.5.0.2 (20060308) Italian and English version as well
I used TB to download my mum's and daddy email from a pop3 server. Few days ago I joined the gmail/beta for domains. I switched my MX server to gmail.
Now I have 3 email accounts mine, my dad and my mum.
I don't know why but if I use TB with mine and my dad it works. If I use my mum account I receive few times a password error (pswd failure) then the last message says: Sending Username did not succeded. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: malformed command w25pf4451733pyw (the last word changes often)
My user is giorgio@giurdanella.biz and works with gmail+pop3 using Thunderbird
My dad user is orazio@giurdanella.biz and works as well
My mum user is tatamarilena@giurdanella.biz and doesn't work at all with gmail (it used to work with my old hosting service)
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Setup the account tatamarilena@giurdanella.biz using gmail
2.Check the mail
3.Sending Username did not succeded. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: malformed command w25pf4451733pyw (the last word changes often)
Actual Results:
I cannot check my mum's email using thunderbird from a gmail pop3
Expected Results:
Check my mum's email using TB and gmail pop3
I tryed with the latest Italian version (my parents pc) and I got the error
I tryed on my pc with the latest English version and I received the error as well

Given you use a Gmail *beta* feature tells a lot (you may not be able to expect full functionality from Google). I presume you used a configuration as described at
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13285&query=thunderbird&topic=0&type=f
?
The obvious difference between the different sender addresses you quoted is that your mother has more than 8 letters which sometimes is implemented badly.
When authenticating yourself, why don't you send your gmail ID instead of the ".biz" address, which anyway is not the major ID associated with your account. At the same time you can still you the ".biz" address as the /From:/ information.
Please report back whether this solves your problem!
(It is quite likely that this is actually a bug on Gmails side, not regarding Thunderbird.)

No it won't help.
As I stated before this error occurs only with my mum account. When I'm using my account (on tb) or my dad account I don't have any problem.
TB is configured properly (otherwise I shouldn't be able to check the email).
If you look on Google you find many other people with the same problem as mine. I really don't know why. I tried on different computer and ONLY my mum's account doesn't work with TB.

you also need to go onto the gmail web-site and configure the gmail account for pop access. Have you done that for your Mom's gmail account?

Yes. I checked everything 20times (Gmail and TB configuration). I also tried to change my mum's password and use a shorter one (4letters+2numbers) but the problem remains.

Maybe this is the cuplrit:

How long ago did you enable POP access? It might easily take 3 days to be activated for a certain account...

All the accounts were created on the same day, and all (except the one with problems) were immediatly active (pop3 included).
I solved the problem deleting that account and creating another one with a shorter address.

I don't know if this helps..but I created a couple of new accounts with same lenght of the one that doesn't workd and...all of them work without any problem.
Hello, I have a similar problem, I have been trying without success to access my gmail account rajhamsa2 @ gmail.com, however, a similar address with rajhamsa @ gmail.com or even rajhamsa.office @ gmail.com and yet one more rajhamsabis @ gmail.com all work fine. COuld it be the '2' that is screwing the authentification process?

I had this problem with GMail accounts. It turns out that the problem was that we had changed our passwords to GMail, failed to login multiple times, and this causes GMail to put a lock on your account for POP access. To unlock the account go to this URL...

for me (i'm not sure about you because of how vague of a description that is) it gives me 4 error messages saying, "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Username and password not accepted." Then it gives me the error message saying, "Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: malformed command i38pf1046744wxd." I have tried another account with the same settings, and it works, and the username and password are correct.

I'm having the same problem as Sean
I'm running Thunderbird 1.5.0.5. on slax.
It seems It's some kind of the same problem as this:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=2213681&highlight=username+contains#2213681
I'm able to send with the same password and username, so it's only a problem on the POP side. I have a username with a "." in the middle.
