I have a mail that contains about > 70KB text. Thunderbird freezes when
1. I try to forward this mail
2. If I compose a new mail and try to paste this text in.

3. After cutting and pasting section by section, it then hanges when I 
   try to fill in the To: mail address. It auto completes the address and
   then hangs.

I have been seeing a lot of problems in  the auto address hanging or 
taking a lot of time.

This has started probably after my latest auto updates. Before that it
was very stable.

The latest version I am using is 1.5.0.5 built on 20060516

Does turning spell checking off help? If so -> duplicate of bug 324521 (fixed for 2.0).
