342125 - New mail notification does not show up and (system) sound for new mail is not played

The new mail alert window does not show up at all and the system sound for new mail is never played. 

When i set this to a custom sound (.wav only, no .ogg) that sound IS played when a manually check a folder for new mail (actually with ugly noise first)

The sound issue may be a problem caused by KDE (v 3.5.2), there is only a system sound for KMail -> new mail. 
Which system sound for new mail is used by thunderbird?

Is there a way to trigger an alert window from a command line to simply test it?



Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. compose a mail and send it to yourself
2. check server for new mail
2. no alert window shows up



Expected Results:  
I expect the alert window to show up on new mail and play a system sound

Plattform: PC, Gentoo Linux, KDE 3.5.2
