To reproduce: Open up Mozilla with the sidebar contracted. Now open the sidebar.
Nothing appears in the Bookmarks panel (or any panel you have as the default).
(But if you switch to another panel and back it will load). Build 2000032308.

Works for me on Linux with 2000-04-01-09.
