Include results from full-text searches (of history, bookmarks, or whatever pages have been added to the index) along with current results from searching titles and URLs. Results from those two searches should probably simply be merged, sorted by last visit. (SQLite might well do that merge automatically.) Results should include snippets from the result pages when possible.
I chatted with brettw about this last week, and he mentioned that it would be a good idea to put the serialized text into a separate .sqlite database.

we have nsPlaintextSerializer [1] to convert the HTML DOM into plain text, but I vaguely remember chatting with jonas about nsPlaintextSerializer, so if we use it we might want to pick his brain about some low hanging performance improvements we could make.

Just getting .textContent on the document node (or any other node) should be much much faster than using the plaintext serializer.

The plaintext contains some bidi and CTK fixup code, which I did not understand what it did. You probably don't need it, but you should make sure that .textContent works correctly for complex test cases.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
