User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060608 Ubuntu/dapper-security Firefox/1.5.0.4
Build Identifier: Thunderbird Version 1.5.0.4 (20060615)
When a custom sound for the new mail event is selected it is played back using a wrong device: It is written over the adress book file abook.mab, so the adress book is destroyed!
I never heard the sound, but sometimes the adress book seems to work afterwards. Probably a randon descriptor is used for the output. Dangerous!
Platform: Kubuntu dapper with 2.6.25-686 kernel
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. configure tunderbird to play custom sound. select a .wav file to play.
2. receive new mail
3. look into abook.mab. it contains the WAV-file!
Actual Results:
Loss of adress book. Part of my destroyed adress book:
...
(^B8=)(^B9=)(^BA=)(^BB=0)(^BC=2)]}
@$$}1}@
RIFF^P©^D^@WAVEfmt ^P^@^@^@^A^@^B^@"V^@^@<88>X^A^@^D^@^P^@dataü§
...
Expected Results:
sound output
Loss of important data. This bug is quite dangerous and probably simple to fix. Please, could somebody have a look at this?

Are you using an official mozilla.org build of Thunderbird or the one that comes with Ubuntu? If you're using the Ubuntu one, could you test with a mozilla.org build and see if you can still reproduce?

I am using the Ubuntu build. Sorry, I forgot to mention this (and was not aware that this may be relevant).
I now installed the official Mozilla release and try to reproduce the issue. Until now without effort. Unfortunately this does not mean that the problem does not exist, because the overwriting of abook.mab occurs only sometimes, not always in the Ubuntu build. I keep testing. What I already can say is, that sound playback does not work with both builds, but generally works with all other apps I use. I'll keep on using the official build and be back as soon as there is a problem
