It pastes something like a empty box.

I find that in Thunderbird version 3, alpha 1, 20060830, that attempting to paste the image pastes nothing at all.

I'm sure I've seen reports about this problem before, perhaps in the newsgroups, but I can't find an earlier bug about this.
This is easily reproducible in TB 1.0.x, 1.5.x and a current 3a1.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Open an HTML compose window
2) Get an image in the clipboard, paste it to message
3) Save as draft
4) Get an image in the clipboard, paste it to message
Actual results:
4) shows as broken image (red-dot icon)
Expected result:
4) shows as original image
This is only a display issue in the compose window. Sending the image yields the correct results -- image is sent and message displays correctly (in Sent folder as well). In fact, if you save the composition as a draft, close the window and open the draft, all images appear correctly.

That's been fixed, but it's currently broken in 2b1 builds; see bug 223909.

Incidentally, when I look at the HTML of the composition immediately after the second paste, everything appears to be innocuous: both <img> tags have a valid 'src' pointing an existing temp file. There may be a timing issue -- I think this may be a dupe of bug 356327, which is fixed on the trunk, but I don't have an up-to-the-minute trunk build.

Incidentally, if TB does an autosave then the same behaviour is exhibited as if the user does a manual save. To get around this bug I have autosave turned off and I am careful not to save the composition until I have sent it.
It is also not only happening on pasting an image from the clipboard either, if the user uses the insert image dialogue, the same behaviour is exhibited.

This seems to be the same as bug 282649 reported in early 2005 against the Mozilla application suite. Some technical detail there. This problem has been frustrating me for ages.

Yeah, that's probably the same thing. That bug is filed against Composer -- that is, the general-purpose HTML file editor -- so it's not necessarily easy to find for people looking for mail dupes. I'll add a dependency, and move this to Core as well since I see this with Seamonkey.
