We made a choice to move to a less saturated icon set, which will result is less contrast against dark backgrounds. It certainly isn't something that can be properly fixed less than 48 hours from final freeze. We know the high contrast mode case isn't as good as it could be, but ideally we'd have high contrast icons to work in that mode (see all of the bugs the linux a11y people filed in the b2 cycle about this very issue).

Dão does it look OK to you in current trunk? Looks good to me with default theme.
