Following up on bug 350971:

The new feature that displays a pop-up when hovering over a folder containing new mail may be nice for some people, but I'd like not to see it.  Altho it can made small enough to be unintrusive by turning off all display items in 
 Tools|Options|General|Advanced  (alert configuration)
that also forces no items to be shown in the new-mail notification (and the tiny, empty box that shows in that case is still a distraction).

I'd like to run with an alert, but without the folder pop-up.  This could be a hidden preference, as far as I'm concerned.

Scott, if you could implement this feature (which I hope would be fairly simple to do) I wouldn't have any real complaints left about the alert/folder pop-up 
system.  Well, except for bug 318792.

Yes, please let us disable the popup folder summary tooltip for all accounts (mail and RSS).  The tooltip is worse than "distracting".

Setting "mail.showPreviewText" to FALSE simply doesn't work.  It's broken.

the current implementation of how to disable the pop-up is not intuitive at all.
(took me 50 minutes of bugzilla investigation)
i'd never expect detail options of an unselected checkbox to have any effect.
(however i had a laugh about the tiny rectangles left in the end)

an about:config option might have solved my problem within 5 minutes.
