User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1 Build Identifier: Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 (20061207) When I installed Thunderbird upgrade 1.5.0.9 (20061207) on 21 December, the installer deleted both my "sent" folder with all its files and Thunderbird's dictionary. None of the other folders were affected. Reproducible: Didn't try Expected Results: Installer should not have deleted these files. Alternately, pre-install instructions should have advised making a back up of Thunderbird's files.
Did you use the Auto-Update (Help- Check for Updates) or did you install the Application via a new Thunderbird Setup 1.5.0.9.exe ? Could you please see if the steps from http://kb.mozillazine.org/Empty_folders helps here ?
Resolving works for me, because after some email contact with the reporter: To answer your question, I originally installed the new Thunderbird setup 1.5.0.9.exe, which I had downloaded from Mozilla. It seems that this is not the proper way to upgrade. Anyway, after receiving your comments to my bug report, before doing anything else, I decided to try reinstalling the new .exe program again. Somewhat to my amazement, this cleared up my problem. Apparently, my original sent files were not deleted, just not properly identified for Thunderbird for some reason. Anyway, they are now all there in my Sent folder. Not only that, the dictionary is now working with my spell checker. When I first made the report, every word that I wrote in an outgoing message had to be added to the dictionary, which was one of the first indications to me that something was wrong. Also works for me on Thunderbird 15009 testings.
