shouldn't these two items have the same functionality? why is the contextual menu for 'mark newsgroup read' greyed out when you can perform this from the message menu? this is from today's nightly build (20-apr-2000)
Mark newsgroup read (context menu) was in 4.x and was a quick way of marking all the newsgroup read without having to open the group and download new headers (some newsgroups have quite the throughput). The main menu item for mark all read is operational for mail or news after you've opened a folder or group. I'd have to reread our specs, but I believe we intend to keep the two different items in this product.

Jennifer,Laurel, is this bug invalid?
The context menu item "Mark newsgroup read" and the Menu item "Message|Mark|All read" do appear to have the same end result. When you select a newsgroup, the product automatically attempts to open the newsgroup and download all the headers. Maybe the context menu item allows you stop that process and mark all messages as read? We will still have both these menu items in SeaMonkey. As for why the context menu item isn't working yet and the menu item is, I'm not sure, but I'm sure this will be fixed eventually.

moving to future milestone. We don't currently have the ability to select a folder and not download messages.
Target Milestone: M17 → Future
Putterman please file a blocking bug for 'select a folder and not download messages.'

This is still not working consistently on RC2. If you display one newsgroup and then use the context menu on another newsgroup the mark newsgroup read has no effect. I also have one newsgroup where the unread count has become stuck at (20) irrespective of the number of unread messages. If you mark this newgroup read the count disappears - only to reappear again later (even when there are no unread messages).

This got fixed somehow. The context menu item is now always available when the corresponding menu item in the message menu is available. "Mark newsgroup read" works like Jennifer suggested in comment #5. The issue raised in comment #10 is bug 65263. Marking WORKSFORME.

I can see two different functionalities making sense: (a) to mark all currently downloaded headers as read (b) to mark everything currently on the newsgroup as read, even headers that haven't been downloaded But if this is by design, the terminology ought to be clear in this respect.
