Details

My TB account downloads messages from a local POP server. If I send a message to myself, then click the "Get all messages" button, the (new) popup message appears near the system tray, and Thunderbird hangs. I am using Fedora Core 6 with all latest updates. My Window Manager is Gnome 2.16.0
If I disable mail alerts in Edit/Prefs "When new messages arrive" by unchecking "Show an alert" all is ok again

oops, you're right, it is non-default theme (Gnome-Tb2). Have switched to default and alerts seem to be working ok.
