User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070219 Firefox/2.0.0.2 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070219 Firefox/2.0.0.2 since the latest update to Firefox, I randomly get an error where I can not scroll up or down using the page up, page down, or arrow keys on my keyboard. I can scroll down using the space bar, or using my mouse. Fixing the problem seems to require activating a window in another program first, then switching back to Firefox (with an actual click inside the firefox window). I'm seeing this error on multiple machines. It seems to occur when I open a new firefox window. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open new Firefox window to a page that requires scrolling (say, nytimes.com). The page that initially opens in Firefox does not have to require scrolling. For example. opening Google.com, then switching to nytimes.com still demonstrates the problem. 2. Try to scroll with page up/down or up/down arrow keys. (Space bar scrolling should work. 3. If the scrolling does not work, click in a window for a different program, then click in the Firefox window. Scrolling should work once again. Actual Results: Keyboard up/down scrolling won't work until you click in another program's window. Side to side scrolling does. Expected Results: scrolling up and down should work properly.
When this happens are you also unable to copy&paste text?
Just tried. Copy/paste appears to work fine. An amendment to my original posting - switching to another window *within* firefox also restores scrolling.
This is very similar to bug 371630 and bug 371745.

Michael, can you list what extensions you have installed. Also, do you ever use more than one firefox window. Also also, can you test in firefox's safemode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode Thanks!
The problem occurs in safe mode (thus running with all extensions disabled). The problem occurs regardless of the number of windows in use (occurs if I launch firefox with a single window (bringing up google as my home page), then go to nytimes.com.) Extensions installed: Adblock Plus 0.7.2.4 (the latest version) DOM Inspector 1.8.1.2 IE View 1.3.2 Linky 2.7.1
OK, can you try with a new profile please? - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager (Don't delete your existing one) Also, do you use caret-browsing mode? (F7 to turn on and off)
The problem does not appear to occur if I use a new profile. (Of course, the new profile is not configured with the same preferences, extensions, etc.) It does, however, occur on multiple machines that I run it on, each with the same extensions, bookmarks, and (for the most part) preferences. Also, it did not occur with 2.0.0. Something appears to have changed in the latest version that is causing the error. I do not use caret browsing mode. Michael
Hello. I just tried to replicate the problem using a new profile again, and this time, creating a new profile did *not* solve the problem. This was a fresh profile, with no add-ons installed. The problem still occurs on multiple machines. Thanks, Michael
I was just about to submit a new bug, but i found this one instead. I have just updated tonight to 2.0.0.3 and I now have this very same problem. Here is the text of the bug report that I was about to file. Sorry if its rather long. I was trying to be thorough. About Dialog: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3 I have just installed the 2.0.0.3 update on Windows XP SP2 + full patches and I am seeing this PageUp/PageDown issue when I go to the firefox release notes (Help->Release Notes). There seem to be quite a number of variables as to when the keys work or don't work. I will try to list what I have tested. My homepage is set to http://www.google.com/firefox *** NOTE: It also seems that whenever the PageUp/Down keys are not working the up/down cursor keys are also not working *** I have created a new test profile and the problem still remains in that new profile. Items 1-3 all had Caret Browsing turned off 1a) Start fixefox, and click Help->Release Notes Res: PageUp/Down to not work. Ctrl+End/Ctrl+Home does 1b) Click on text within the page Res: PageUp/Down still do not work 1c) Close firefox 2a) Start firefox 2b) Start a second firefox session and click Help->Release Notes Res: PageUp/Down to not work. Ctrl+End/Ctrl+Home does 2c) Alt+Tab to first session 2d) Alt+Tab back to second session Res: PageUp/Down now work correctly 2e) Close firefox 3a) Start firefox. By default the cursor is in the Google search textbox. Press PageUp/PageDown (nothing will happen) 3b) Click Help->Release Notes Res: PageUp/Down will still not be working 3c) Close firefox 3a) Start firefox. Click on the "Firefox Start" banner. Then press PageUp/Down keys 3b) Click Help->Release Notes Res: PageUp/Down will immediately be working correctly 3c) At this point I pressed F7 to turn on Caret Browsing 3d) Close firefox Item 4 had Caret Browsing turned on 4a) Start fixefox, and click Help->Release Notes Res: PageUp/Down to not work. Ctrl+End/Ctrl+Home does 4b) Click on the word Release on the second line (it currently reads "These Release Notes cover what's new, download...") Res: PageUp/Down still do not work 4c) The caret will be visible. Alternating between the right cursor key and the PageDown key, keep pressing one then the other until you get the the word "download". Res: PageDown will not work until you read the end of the "what's new" url. Once you reach the end of the url suddenly PageDown and PageUp will start working. 4d) Close firefox There are probably many more combinations that will/won't work. It would be nice to see if anyone else can replicate this. I dont know if it makes any difference, but my normal user account does not have any admin privs. I only login as an admin user when i need to do admin type stuff, so all of this behaviour has been observed on what XP calls a "limited user account". Finally, I have Windows XP SP2 installed into a virtual PC that has undo disk enabled. I installed the 13th April nightly trunk into this virtual machine (which has never had any version of firefox installed in it previously). The problem seem to be fixed in the nightly trunk build. I then closed down and restarted the virtual machine so it was back in its pre-firefox state again and I installed 2.0.0.3 en-us. Once again the PageUp/Down and cursor up/down keys do not work in that version and it behaves exactly as I described the problem above. Regards Ian
Ok. I've isolated a possible cause for this bug, or at least a way to reproduce it on a *clean* profile. It is definitely not related to a plug-in. It does appear to be related to bookmarks. Steps: 1) firefox.exe -ProfileManager 2) Create new profile 3) Go to slashdot.org. The problem does not occur 4) Import my bookmarks file 5) Restart firefox 6) Click on link to http://slashdot.org/ 7) Problem occurs.
Could this be a dupe of bug 374881? Can someone please test with Fx 2.0.0.4 RC1? http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2.0.0.4-candidates/rc1/
I experienced the same behavior as described above (using Fx 2.0.0.3 on Linux) and I tested with Fx 2.0.0.4 RC1 (firefox-2.0.0.4.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz) and that solves it for me, ie. normal page up/down behavior. All I did was extract the tarball to some directory and run the firefox script from there, keeping my existing profile. BTW, bug 371630 seems very similar to this one, I'll ask people there to test with 2.0.0.4 RC1 as well.
