If I'm looking at a message in a standalone window, I can type S and it will be given a star -- but I can't *see* the star. I was looking at one today, and starred it, and then worked on a reply to it. After I'd sent the reply, I starred it (because I'd forgotten if I had already), closed the standalone, and noticed no star in the thread pane on that same item. If there were immediate feedback in the envelope, the way there is when adding a tag, it would be great. You could even just put the star icon at the beginning of the Tags header, rather than creating a new tag.
