1st screenshot of the narrow Pref panel
I just noticed that the Preferences panel on Windows XP is too narrow. I didn't notice that before because I've got Ligthning installed, which enlarges the Pref panel. Using the tip given by mscott here : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=373396#c5 , the size should be 50em instead of 48em. <!ENTITY prefWindow.styleWin "width: 48em; height: 38em;">
