I would like to suggest an enhancement to the vertical view layout offered by Thunderbird.  I find that on screens with good horizontal resolution there is a lot of wasted space above the message pane because menu bar, "mail toolbar" and other toolbars only use the left half (or less) of the toolbar.  With wide screens especially the message pane could really benefit from the extra vertical space.  So I would propose with vertical view you have the option to have the message pane extend up to the top of the Thunderbird window.  The menu bar, mail toolbar, etc. would butt against the left side of the message pane.  I will attempt to illustrate with ascii art:

I notice that when the search bar is displayed that it only displays above the message list and message panes, not above the folder list pane.  So not having a bar on the top butt up against the side of one of the 3 main panes is not without precedent.

This could be implemented as another layout to still allow for the old vertical view layout when that works better.

Per bug 306125 comment 18 - version 115 will be implimenting layout changes
