Does this not sound like something that should be celebrated? Does jwz still own his club in SF? Let's do it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Find a place 2. Pick a date 3. Let everyone know
Please reassign to asa@mozilla.org, and maybe cc jwz... :-)

The initial source release was 31-Mar-1998, so the ten year would be 31-Mar-2008. That's a Monday. That date will certainly be available at DNA Lounge... (There's even some slight chance that we'll be all ages instead of 21+ by then, but I can't promise that.)

(But it occurs to me that anyone who was even remotely aware of that initial source release will be well over 21 by now...)

Yeah. We're gonna throw a party.

we probably need to ensure that we allow < 21 year old people there. I think adolescence now begins with a desire to compile the mozilla code.

If you guys are interested in having a Mozilla 10 year anniversary party, now's the time to start planning it. DNA Lounge is currently available on Mon Mar 31. We are 21+. If you want me to take care of booking you DJs, bands, or other entertainment, I can do that, but I need to know what your budget is.

Hi Jamie: Thank you for the kind offer! We're actually going to take the whole year to recognize the anniversary (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/mitchell/archives/2008/01/mozilla_celebrating_the_first.html) and not be as focused on 3/31. Why keep it at just one day?! We will definitely recognize the day considering its importance -- probably on the Web. Additionally, when we throw our local Bay Area party it will need to be accessible to the under 21 crowd. Do you guys plan on lifting that this year? Thanks!

Mary: That's lame. JWZ is offering up the lounge as a place to have an honest-to-goodness shindig, and that's just going to be ignored? Lame. Super-lame.

Have an open house at the office during the day for all and then have a grown up party at the club?

Hi there: Let me clarify -- I wasn't ruling this out. I think this is a very kind offer and I know the significance the DNA lounge has played in Mozilla history. I do think its important to be inclusive of the under 21 crowd. Or we can arm 'em with fake ids...last time I was there I had one ;-) I was wondering if this would lift this year. If not, is there any special procedures we could put in place in terms of bracelets, etc. I'm not sure what sort of insurance jwz has. Trust me -- I know what a great offer this and appreciate it. Just trying to make it as inclusive of everyone as possible. Thanks!

Dredd: Let's be polite here. Mary is pointing out that the Bay Area event should be inclusive to all. I don't see how she's ignoring jwz in any way. Certainly it's not the end of the world if it's 21+, and it may well have to be at a 21+ venue, but not everyone who cares about Mozilla is over 21 so it's a perfectly valid thing to consider. Conveniently enough, I'm an SF resident under 21. I'd gladly write to the Entertainment Commission or ABC in support of DNA's application if that would do any good.

Zach: the tone she used in her original comment seemed to be of the lame "we're not doing anything on 3/31, we're doing something all year". In other words, blowing off the party offer entirely because "they're doing something all year". Personally, I don't see that it matters horribly if ($age<21) can't get in. For anyone who is ($age<21) who wants to come and is disappointed, we can arm them with the statistics on how much more responsible european youths are with alcohol use and the address of their local legislator. ;-) Yes, in a perfect world, the 'younguns' could get in, but let's be realistic about who a ten-year anniversary party is going to be more appealing to, and that's old-timers who've been following the project since the Earth cooled, and they're not under 21. If they're celebrating "all year long" there'll be plenty of other events the younguns can get into, right? ;-)

Make sure you don't accidentally mention the UK when you do that... they might die laughing. :-|

I interpreted Mary's response as, "we're not having a party at all, anywhere." If that's not what she meant, then I'm glad! There is no legal way to have anyone under 21 attend a party at DNA Lounge. I promise you that I am more unhappy with this state of affairs than any of you are, but that's the way it is. If you think that's enough reason to rule out DNA for your party, that's your prerogative. However, we did have a 21+ Mozilla party here in 2002 that was successful.

I don't recall anyone from that era that was 11 or 12, except maybe Zach and Pavlov :-) Let me tell you why I filed the bug. It's simply that I want to see my friends and co-workers from that time once again, all under one roof. I'm sure that many like me feel the same, because Netscape and Mozilla, and the people they worked with, were such a big part of their lives.

Even if the age could be lowered, it only lets in a small set of the under 21 set that would want to participate. Many parents wouldn't want their children to go to a club anyway, and anyone under 15 is probably not going to have that great of a time anyway (hello awkward school dances!) At the same time, I think most of the adults aren't going to want to party hard in front of kids, nor will they have as much fun at a family oriented event. If having a two stage day (family then 21+) wouldn't be viable, what about not having a closed party on the night at DNA but having a theme night? I've never been there but I"d imagine there's a separate room that community members could use to find each other.

Really, we'd close down the place with just the 21 and ups. A side room wouldn't cut it. If I recall, the 2002 party was pretty full. Jamie, just pipe in some techno Internet radio station for background noise, I think most people will be there to talk, anyway. Oh, and sell us drinks :-). Maybe we can show the PBS video on a big screen, and have Brendan get up and fill us in on the Mozilla roadmap for entertainment (is RDF gone, *yet*?) :-) I'm betting you'll do better than most Monday nights.

Hi all: I'm not one to say no to a party, especially one for Mozilla :) Let's make this happen -- is anyone interested in planning/organizing? What do we have to secure the DNA for that night? I wholeheartedly agree with everyone that 3/31 can't go unrecognized -- I think we're all on the same page here. We're also looking into having another bay area party later in the year, post-Firefox 3 that would include the young'uns as well! Let me know.

Cool! 3/31 is still available, so if you want to have a party at DNA Lounge, what we need is: 1) Tell me that for sure! 2) Tell me what your budget is. I'm willing to donate the cost of rental and DNA staffing, but entertainers need to be paid (djs, bands, etc). 3) You're welcome to handle the entertainment side of things yourself, or I can do it for you. Let me know which. 4) If I'm handling entertainment, let me know if you have any preferences or suggestions... This will be easiest if I have one point of contact with mozilla.org; I assume that's you, Mary?

Hi there: Let's consider it a go -- everyone seemed to be in favor of it. Speaking of which...who wants to help plan??! I think we should keep it pretty casual in terms of entertainment so that we can actually talk and perhaps run Code Rush in the background. Can we talk this week about things? My number is 415-336-5938. Thanks!

Hi all: Update here...we talked with jwz and decided that since the party is going to pretty low key and smaller than previous ones it's not a good fit for the DNA Lounge. The party will be in the front room of 111 Minna: 111 Minna St (between 2nd St & New Montgomery St) San Francisco, CA 94105 (415) 974-1719 www.111minnagallery.com 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. I really want to thank jwz for stepping up and offering his place -- I really appreciate your help and sorry that it wasn't a good fit. I will update the bug with RSVP details shortly and ping David Boswell to update mozilla.org/party. Thanks and really looking forward to meeting folks...and, still can use some help on planning. John O'Duinn has volunteered to pitch in with the planning and Alex Vincent has signed up to draft public transportation details. Still recruiting!

Directions by public transit, from Google Maps (I hope it's right). Go to Montgomery BART station, exit on 2nd Street. Follow 2nd Street southeast for four intersections, and turn right. Return trips on BART are not factored into the schedule here, but they cost the same. Depending on where you're going, you'll need to take two trains, and wait a bit longer. From various points in BART to Montgomery BART station: Millbrae (best for CalTrain riders) - Departures roughly every 15 minutes, approximately 30 minutes to Montgomery. $4.00. I recommend the 6:03 pm departure. Fremont: Best bet is to take the 5:51 pm Daly City train, which goes directly to Montgomery. If you're later than that, it'll be two trains you catch - the Richmond train every 15 minutes, then transfer to the Daly City train at 12th Street Oakland station - heading downstairs, I think. Either way, from Fremont it's $5.25. Richmond: Get on the Fremont train, and transfer to the Daly City train at MacArthur station. Departures every 15 minutes from Richmond, total is $4.00. Pittsburg/Bay Point: The Daly City train runs every fifteen minutes. Recommend the 5:47pm departure for arrival at Montgomery BART at 6:40 pm. $5.60. Anywhere on BART: Whatever you do, get in the forward most car of the train. Otherwise, the subway noise will likely make you wince. Other systems: * Caltrain: See http://www.caltrain.com/timetable.html#weekday-northbound for timetables - recommend arriving at Millbrae at 5:43pm. (Often the CalTrain and BART systems synch up with each other, but I'm not sure of that.) Note for the return trip that CalTrain runs roughly every hour until midnight, so be prepared for a long, long wait. * Golden Gate Transit: Pretty much any route going to San Francisco goes within a couple blocks of 111 Minna Street - you'll actually end up a little closer than you would on BART. http://goldengatetransit.com * MUNI - Many routes go downtown, including the J-Church, K-Ingleside, L-Taraval, M-Ocean View, N-Judah, and T-Third Street MUNI light rail lines. Any of these light rail lines goes to Montgomery BART/MUNI station. http://sfmuni.com General transit - and decent trip planning - information available via http://transit.511.org . Don't forget your black shirts with red stars!

It was a full house, people from Netscape, Moz 1.0, and current eras were all in attendance. Thanks to those who organized the event, and much thanks to those who showed up. It was so good to see so many familiar faces, and talk about times past and present. Marking resolved, fixed.
