User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.6 (20070728) After opening a Compose window (new, or via reply or forward), entering ASCII text, and successfully sending the email, a phantom Compose window sometimes remains. The header of the Compose window says "Compose: (no subject) - Western (Windows 1252)". The taskbar entry shows "Compose:" then a portion of the subject from the previous email that was successfully sent. The Compose window itself is entirely transparent. All that appears is the header and frame. Whatever is in the window behind the phantom window shows thru the phantom window frame. Attempts to close the window by clicking the red X box upper right corner of the phantom Compose window result in an error sound with no action (ie, the red X doesn't highlight or depress). Right clicking the taskbar item associated with teh window does not display a menu. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open new compose window, or reply/forward opens new compse window 2. Type message 3. Hit send Actual Results: After hitting send, a phantom compose window sometimes remains at same spot where the previous compose window existed before being successfully sent. Expected Results: After hitting send, I expect the compose window to close when the email is successfully sent with no phantom compose window left over. There are no error messages of any kind. In order to eliminate the phantom Compose window, I must close Thunderbird and relaunch it.
There are at least 4 open bugs for zombie compose window: Bug 347693, Bug 379737, Bug 380275 (and old/unclear Bug 235019) (Different conditions, but seems to be same problem) Which case? Or problem when new condition?
Oldest Bug 235019 is similar to mine except for these differences/questions asked: No attachment required to generate bug. One CPU. Mail is POP. No virtual desktop software used. Not always reproducible. Referring to Bug 347693, I use WinXP SP2 not linux. Not using SeaMonkey, but do use Lightning 0.5. Do not have to "close compose window very quickly after open" for bug to occur. Referring to Bug 379737, no virtual desktop software used. Not always reproducible. Referring to Bug 380275, have not changed hardware acceleration settings of the graphics card. Not using memory optimizer software. Have Firefox 2006 installed, but not in use when bug occurs. IE6 is usually open. Will verify Auto Save and Confirmation configuration and update comments when I return this evening.
Following up on Auto Save and Confirmation configuration: [1] I Auto Save every 5 minutes. [2] "Show confirmation dialog when messages are saved" is unchecked, but have checked it to see if it makes any difference. [3] Also, I only use the Send button when sending mail. And in no case, has the phantom window problem ever been generated from opening or sending a saved draft message. Also please note when an email is sent, and the phantom compose windows appears, the draft folder is empty.
Update to Auto Save and Confirmation configuration: It APPEARS that checking "Show confirmation dialog when messages are saved", and clicking OK when the draft confirmation pop-up appears every 5 min, stops the phantom compose window from occurring. The phantom window did not appear after 4 days in this configuration. However, performing "Steps to Reproduce" above BEFORE the draft confirmation pop-up appears does NOT stop the phantom window problem. It just happened a few moments ago. Just for grins, I opened Windows Task Manager. The phantom compose window appeared in the Applications tab and "thunderbird.exe" appeared in the Processes tab. When I clicked "End Task", the "Not Responding" pop-up appeared. Clicking "End Task" in the pop-up: [1] closed TB [2] closed the phantom compose window [3] removed the phantom compose window from Task Manager Applications tab [4] removed "thunderbird.exe" from Task Manager Processes tab
Feel free to assign this as dup of Bug 380275. Whatever the disposition, I hope it gets fixed soon.
