On secure sites, autocomplete results won't align with what you've typed. That's quite confusing and also annoying.

This was mentioned in bug 395248 comment 8. See also bug 395174.

I think gavin is on to something with bug #395174:
as you type in the url bar, and the site changes, should the "site" part of larry go back to normal?
Summary: Larry breaks autocomplete → On secure sites, due to Larry, autocomplete results won't align with what you've typed

Last time I talked to johnath I'm pretty sure he agreed that the identity UI should shrink back to just a favicon button when you edit the location.

maybe we should design an interface that doesn't require so much animation.

That would shift the entire address, which is certainly not helpful if you want to edit it.

Now that the awesome bar patches have landed and the drop down presentation is substantially different than the location bar text, is this really still an issue? The typing that happens now is unlikely to align with the results in any meaningful way regardless of Larry. At very least, I don't think this is a P2 blocker any more...

Re-nom'ng to give drivers another pass - the changes to the autocomplete drop down have made the text alignment issue much less apparent/jarring, imo. The favicons line up, and my eye is drawn to the dynamic text match feedback rather than to the domain-name misalignment as it was when this was reported. Compare attachment 282347 [details] and attachment 291243 [details].

I agree that the issue isn't as big of a deal with the new autocomplete formatting. Also, in the case of a very long domain or organization name, aligning the results to the location bar instead of the site button could result in only a small area for results. Due to that issue I recommend we wontfix.

I'd concur with the WONTFIX for this issue, but we should make sure that there's a bug on file tracking the fact that clicking the identity button should return the location bar to the address of the page, as otherwise we can get into a situation where we're asserting identity with the wrong address in the location bar (ex: go to mozilla.org, type "foo.org", click identity button)
