Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.9a9pre) Gecko/2007101104 Minefield/3.0a9pre Summary: Java applet hangs / Minefield stops responding to key/mouse events Steps to Reproduce: 1. Load http://www.nintendo8.com/game/314/super_mario_brothers_3/ (or any game, really) 2. Focus/click on the page's Java applet area Expected Results: Applet initializes and the game loads Actual Results: Minefield stops responding to mouse/key events

This isn't a bug in the JEP. But as of the 2007-10-10 trunk nightlies (both Minefield and Camino), attempting to load _any_ Java applet produces the results described in comment #0. The 2007-10-09 trunk nightlies don't have this problem. This is very likely fallout from the patch for bug 393928.

The beta shouldn't ship with Java broken on Mac OS X.

Looks to me like the patch on bug 393928 hasn't landed yet.

Yes it did: http://bonsai.mozilla.org/cvsquery.cgi?treeid=default&module=all&branch=HEAD&branchtype=match&dir=&file=&filetype=match&who=&whotype=match&sortby=Date&hours=2&date=explicit&mindate=2007-10-09+18%3A24%3A00&maxdate=2007-10-09+18%3A24%3A00&cvsroot=%2Fcvsroot

This is not any better on Windows or Linux. JAVA is mostly broken since the patch for bug 393928 landed.

Setting back to mac os x only. My testing was flawed. Actually this testcase does work under Windows and Linux. I have others that fail under windoes and Linux though.

This bug seems to have been fixed by the fix for bug 399406. This bug's URL now loads fine, as do simple applets like the following that I know don't use LiveConnect: http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/Clock/example1.html So also does a very complex test of applet and non-applet LiveConnect: http://poslfit.homeip.net/test/liveconnecttest.html I'll do my best to keep an eye on things. But for now everything seems to be fine.

The fix for bug 399406 (and for this bug) isn't available in today's trunk nightlies. But it should be available in tomorrow's.

I'm having problems on http://www.v-workshops.com/java/; I have to click on the middle of the page in order for the applet to appear. Firefox 2.0.0.8 loads that just fine. Sadly, Nintendo8.com is down, but you're right, Steven, all the other sites seem to be working fine for me; maybe this is a new bug.

(In reply to comment #9) > I'm having problems on http://www.v-workshops.com/java/; I have to click on the > middle of the page in order for the applet to appear. On both Minefield Mac and Camino trunk build, this is indeed the case. Probably better to file a new bug on that.

Still happening on the original URL; reopening. Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.9a9pre) Gecko/2007102204 Minefield/3.0a9pre on http://www.nintendo8.com/game/314/super_mario_brothers_3/ Once you click the applet, Minefield "hangs"--stops responding to mouse/keyboard events--but doesn't enter the "Not Responding" state, according to the OS.

Stephen, I can reproduce the problems you report in comment #12. And I've found that they happen only on the trunk, and appear to have been caused by the patch for bug 393928. But it's no longer the case that all Java applets have the same problem (and that the JEP is entirely disabled). Your original report (though it concerns the same URL and was literally true) was seriously inaccurate -- because you didn't notice that all Java applets were effected. So this bug is now about that problem. Please open a new bug on the problem you've reported in comment #12. And after you open the new bug, please keep an eye out for other Java applets that have the same problem. I currently only know of the one, so I have no idea how serious this problem really is.

I should add that the problems you describe in comment #12 only happen when this bug's URL is the first applet you load (in your browser session) -- that's why I didn't notice earlier the continuing problems with this bug's URL.

Here's hoping that bug 401053 is accurately filed this time.
