Sounds like bug 279018 and/or bug 324777.

that was AGES ago, and in my case, NO messages get moved to the junk folder, regardless of what I do.

What do you mean it was ages ago? Bug 279018 is even fixed for 2.0.0.9 which will be out shortly.

Sorry, I just saw some posts on 32477 dated Jan 06 and 'jumped' to that conclusion

Still happens with latest thunderbird or 3.0 beta?
