To open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system" This just started happening recently. After the update and close of software. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Close the windows on the screen...All of them! 2.Click on the on the Firfox icon... 3.Message pops up with the details above. Actual Results: The window pops up saying the detailed message. Expected Results: Detailed message The software should have opened the Firefox browser.
I have exactly the same problem and have been unable to access Firefox for the past few days. I have uninstalled the program, re-downloaded it and installed the new version all to no avail. I am still getting the same message as the user above.
Product: Firefox → Toolkit
Do you see this problem using FF3?
Version: unspecified → 1.8 Branch
Running Firefox 3.03 on Windows Vista just fine when I closed it last night. Woke up and went to open it. Opened then closed immediately upon my opening Speed Dial. Did that a second time then would no longer open anew. Just keeps telling me another instance of Firefox is running and to close it first or restart PC. I've done that about 55 times today. I have wasted an entire day uninstalling & reinstalling. Trying to download from another machine to disk and install from that. Cleared cache, Check every process, security, connection setting. No problems with Internet Explorer. Even installed AOL VR to try downloading a new version of FF 3.03 from there. NOTHING HELPS! Same message. I am beat. Please help. Thank you, JT jerrytuccillo@aol.com
will be an interesting testcase if we can determine the problem is NOT external to FF
You get the same error message if the profile is empty/can't be found. We have a bug for that somewhere. Running Mozilla with the -profilemanager option should help in that case.
yup, i'm looking right at it - bug 442798. So, um, if people lose their profiles they get this stupid message?
If you get the message after rebooting you have this issue. There is another issue if there is a lockfile in the profile folder left but i think that should generate a different error message but I'm unsure about that.
i have the same issue, but if I press F5 or right click 'refresh' on the desktop, then I can open Firefox....
There a lot of bugs with this issue can someone please check https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=Firefox+is+already+running to see them and mark as duplicates as needed
All of these bugs are not just on Windows but Ubuntu as well. can someone please change that as needed.
There are a lot of bugs and most bugs are not the same reason and in most cases invalid. (caused by Addon). I didn't found a single case where it happens with a clean and new profile without addons.
CTRL+ALT+DEL Task Manager Processes Left click on firefox.exe End process Confirm And you're done. But why???
Any one have a clue which addons are causing this problem. So far I have uninstalled ForecastFox & Yahoo toolbar. It has reduced the number of times its happened but has not stopped it.
Can someone please explain which steps are needed after a reboot or start of the computer?
(A) "Firefox is really still running" case? (Firefox doesn't terminate. Started Firefox freezes with no window.) Or (B) "parent.lock remained" case? (system crash while Fx is running and re-boot) Or (C) "fake error message of 'firefox is already running'" case? If (C), same issue as one of bug 278860, bugs listed in Dependency Tree for bug 278860, Bug 442798, isn't it?
Additionally I can not terminate FF exe. thru the Task Manager I must restart the computer & it's using alot of ram also. This is on a Vista 32bit Sp1 system the latest FF 3.
(In reply to comment #17) > I can not terminate FF exe. thru the Task Manager > I must restart the computer & it's using alot of ram also. To coachop94@sbcglobal.net(problem reporter to comment #14 & 17): (Q1) Can you reproduce your problem with newly created profile? (Q2) What firewall software do you use? Can you reproduce problem with disabling firewall software(and/or anti-virus software)? If freeze occurs in firewall(or anti-virus) program who intercept Firefox's request, such phenomenon can occur. I saw some reports for this in other bugs. If firewall software issues dialog but it goes to other MS Windows user concurrently logs in, firewall program who intercepts Firefox's request waits reply to the dialog forever, then Firefox freezes/never terminates. I experienced this case with Sygate(or Keiro or Sunbelt) Personal Firewall in the past.
I have not yet created a new profile.Don't know how to create a new one. I use ZoneAlarm firewall & can reproduce it with it on & off. I did recently install Avast Anti-Virus.
Summary: Mozzilla claims "Firefox is already running, but not responding" → Mozilla claims "Firefox is already running, but not responding"
coachop94: Your error is a Zonealarm bug and deactivating doesn't help in that case because the buggy ZA firewall driver is still active, see bug 470849
To terminate Firefox without restarting your PC: - CTRL+ALT+DEL Task Manager Processes tab Left click on firefox.exe Click on End Process Confirm And you're done.

as of 6-09 this problem is still happening.
Just updated latest Firefox and I have the same problem. I exit Firefox to desktop. I can no longer get back to Firefox. Message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system" Should I downgrade to a lower version of Firefox?
I just experienced this issue with a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit and Firefox 5. Only addon installed is 1Password.
Still happening in Firefox 7.0.1. Issue happens when Firefox is closed and then started right away. Closing the message box and waiting a second or so fixes the issue most of the time. On rare occasion I have to kill the process from memory.
Just had this problem occur in Firefox 8. I closed all Firefox windows and was doing something else. After half an hour tried starting Firefox but got "Firefox is already running" message. Had to kill process from task manager.
Same problem, in Firefox 10, after 'clear history' is done, and now i realized that this could happen even if i don't use 'clear history'. Close firefox - try to open it after few seconds, message appears. (When you use 'clear history' you will have to wait 20-30 seconds, or more, till re-opening, or, rather, to remove process in task manager)
