Right now, to get to the Places folder using the keyboard, one has to press Alt+B for the Bookmarks menu, the letter b three times to get to the "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" sub menu, RightArrow, which lands you on "Places", and RightArrow again to get to the "Recently starred" item. Alternatively, you'd press Ctrl+B for Organize Bookmarks, and navigate to the Places folder in the TreeView, which is also not convenient.

Suggestion: Introduce a keystroke, for example Alt+P, which opens the Places folder directly.
Alt+P would also be discoverable if done as an accesskey.
I'm not sure what the conventions are on using alt+ a letter to open something that's not on the menubar.
I don't think I've ever seen that in any other application, not to say we can't do it.
Yes, alt+ mnemonics are used outside of the menubar frequently in UIs.

For example, IE 6 uses "A_d_dress as a label for the location bar. The underlined D is what makes Alt+D discoverable as the location bar shortcut.
Marco: Is this bug still relevant, considering that there's no Places folder in Firefox 3.0? At least I'm not sure that the Most Visited smart folder deserves its own accesskey.

Then again, this bug might rather be about accessing the items on the bookmarks toolbar (which is significantly easier with the mouse) than accessing a specific item on it.
Simon, this bug is still relevant, but a bit modified. The Alt+B, B, B, RightArrow steps to open the Bookmarks Toolbar is still relevant and cumbersome.. I agree that this should be the target of the keyboard shortcut rather than a sub folder of it.
Summary: Provide a shortcut to directly open the Places folder. → Provide a shortcut to directly open the Bookmarks Toolbar.
This is very relevant.
The bookmarks bar is useful for one-click access to some sites and for bookmarklets but it takes screen space so it's almost a must, usability wise, to have a keyboard shortcut to open/close it.
Chrome uses Ctrl+Shift+B and I think Firefox should use the same.
This will be dealt with in the complete keyboard overhaul in bug 1436086. Closing WONTFIX.
