The comment contains an Unicode Character 'RIGHT-TO-LEFT OVERRIDE' character and  from that point it is difficult to understand / read the following content.


If you made thousands of edits at pages showing / containing non latin characters in small monospace textboxes as at

you are happy to add via JavaScript some buttons to change the directionality of the textarea and or to override it.


This is done via rhe Javascript specified in

I will provide some screen dimps in order to understand how the buttons work.


This enhancement request asks for three things:

a) provide a button entities which converts all General Punctuation and Whitespace characters either in html-entities if available or if not in &#nnn; notation.

b) please provide some equivalents to the Java buttons from the mentioned script in order tom detect in what order characters have ben inserted in a comment (this would be done via an override.

c) Please provide some options to be able to specify both the font and the fontsize to be used in textareas / textboxes or when comments are displayed. I assume that noone would edit in Devanagari or Chinese with an improper 9pt font.

Please split the request in separate items if necessary. Thanks in advance!

There are some scrollbars both horizontaly and verticaly.

whern starting to edit the directionality of te textarea inherits from the directionality of the content language of the wiki; override is turned off

in the exmple a wiki in Yiddishb is edited so the directionality would be RTL

When selecting the right location / lines inside the textarea one can click on the « dir=ltr » button; the directionality of the textarea is now LTR but bidirectional text still is displayed according to the bidirectional algorithm.

note: because inside a textarea there are only a few « paragraphs » the whole character colection, some thousands characters render in a very strange maner, deleting or inserting one character may influence several lines and moving the curser keys folows an « Klingon » logic.

Please note that Hebrew characters are still displayed as normal and should read from right to left.

If you klick now on the and « bidi=override » button you may see that the characters are displayed in the order they where typed. Hebrew words would be read now from left to right (as they where typed).


The representation achieved now allows to verify wiki syntax and edit as normal LTR text.

note: As you may have seen in the attachments there are places marked red and some comments about the object surrounding the textarea. These issues are no subject here.

However I will try to reference to this BiDi editing features when it is about issues that you click on a place inside the text but the cursor does not find his way to that location. However these issues are quite complex as beside the browser also JavaScript and the operating system are involved.

As I understand it, you're asking for a button in Bugzilla, next to the comments field, that reverses the ordering of text. This is not useful enough to implement.

If the request for the buttons is "not useful enough to implement" I would be alsomore happy with a better solution.
