The bug might be fixed with the procedure described in
Bug 406406 – remedy against BiDi interference caused by the (arbitrary) content of various fields (edit)

The procedure there is using <span ...>foo bar</span> syntax. There should be an equivalent where the General Punctuation characters

# Unicode Character 'LEFT-TO-RIGHT EMBEDDING' - U+202A
HTML Entity (decimal) &#8234; – (hex) &#x202a; – UTF-8 (hex) 0xE2 0x80 0xAA (e280aa) %E2%80%AA %e2%80%aa
# Unicode Character 'RIGHT-TO-LEFT EMBEDDING' - U+202B
HTML Entity (decimal) &#8235; – (hex) &#x202b; – UTF-8 (hex) 0xE2 0x80 0xAB (e280ab) %E2%80%AB %e2%80%ab
# Unicode Character 'POP DIRECTIONAL FORMATTING' - U+202C

are used.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open more windows with the url http://yi.wiktionary.org/wiki/category:bugzilla/open_issues?uselang=yi#top
2. you will see a BiDi interfearence of the page title and the « Mozilla Firefox <n> » suffix of the window titles

Actual Results:
the window titles look quite ugly

Expected Results:
display « clean » window titles as

Enter a Bug - Mozilla Firefox

for this window
As you can see at http://pastebin.com/f5fb787cd

the page title is not only RTL it is a BiDi text

<title>באַניצער:לערי ריינהארט/tests/bugzilla – װיקיװערטערבוך</title>

the character stream is as following:

<title>&#1489;&#1488;&#1463;&#1504;&#1497;&#1510;&#1506;&#1512;:&#1500;&#1506;&#1512;&#1497; &#1512;&#1497;&#1497;&#1504;&#1492;&#1488;&#1512;&#1496;/tests/bugzilla – &#1520;&#1497;&#1511;&#1497;&#1520;&#1506;&#1512;&#1496;&#1506;&#1512;&#1489;&#1493;&#1498;</title>

Dear friends,

I assume that the lines are not quite informative because this text can be generated in many different ways.

In order to show you how difficult it can be to identify what is going on I want to let you know what I do normaly:

a) I open a primitive textarea editor as at
http://yi.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=project:foo_bar&action=edit&uselang=en#top

b) then I copy the title from the page source and surround with visible characters and &#nnnn; encoded General Punctuation characters as

a&#8237;באַניצער:לערי ריינהארט/tests/bugzilla – װיקיװערטערבוך&#8236;z

c) I make a preview in the wiki, copy the text begining with the visible character "a" to the visible last character "z" and insert it here

aבאַניצער:לערי ריינהארט/tests/bugzilla – װיקיװערטערבוךz

d) If I delete the first character from this character stream with the "Del"-key, if I go to the end and delete the last character with the "Backspace"-key I get this:

באַניצער:לערי ריינהארט/tests/bugzilla – װיקיװערטערבוך

Because the General Punctuation characters are not visible any more (and these characters are performing a "left to right override" of the character stream) you will see the characters as they where typed on the keyboard (or have been obtained by a lot of trial and errors).

Perhaps you understand now the meaning of
Bug 406472 – provide some optional tools (buttons) to be able to identify what characters are in a text (edit)
which requires better functionality to obtasin identical results.

Bug 406472 is clasified as WONTFIX at this moment in time.

re: selecting a text inside a LRO (left to right override) text block with the mouse is messy

Posting a separate comment in order to open a new bug regarding strange text selection with the the mouse which relates in *no* way to the position of the curser moving over the text.

I assume that this is a bug of the operating system.

In my case a Linux KDE 3.5.5 issue.

Please compare with
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154840
Bug KDE Bug Tracking System 154840: BiDi issue in KDE window titles - multiple windows having title foo, foo <n>

If this is the case please close this bug with resolution « INVALID »
