well, I've absolutely NEVER seen it before, but <isindex> is a real tag:

Basicly, in IE and NS it displays the following (or something close):

This is a searchable index. Enter search keywords: [textbox to search in]

this should be a fairly easy hack so that it just displays the text and a textbox
