A long discussion, describing it, and the merits of it. As that refered to bug is set as resolved, and the original task, compleate, and in 8.0.0b2 I have started this bug for votes to be specific on this issue, and to make sure its not lost in the depths of a closed ticket. My best description, is a third UI option. Not 3 nor 2 pane, but allow multiple windows to be opened in eudora, but stay within the core window. Eudora 7.x allowed this, and is one of the "feel" things the long term users love.. When I minimize my mail, it all goes away, when I bring it back, all 3000 windows come back, if thats the dirty window user I am.. In real terms, I open a window and leve it there untill I have dealt with it for that day. Thats the way I work, and have always worked.. Even Lotus Notes does this!! Vote for this specific issue if thats what you wanted. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
> When I minimize my mail, it all goes away, when I bring it back, all 3000 > windows come back, if thats the dirty window user I am.. And, if I follow Nathen correctly; when I close ALL the mail message sub-windows, *Eudora does not quit*. It's perhaps out of sight, but still collecting mail; and when I focus on it again, it's up. [This is not a Mac issue, but is a M$ one.] I hate mistakenly closing the last [M$] T-bird window, and ^&*$(&^ I then have to reenter all 5 account passwords again. A note: one problem for me with this whole discussion has been the ambiguity of the terms, especially across platforms. It seems like there's been lots of 'blind men & the elephant' confusion. Someone put up some sample screenshots a while back. We could use some of classic Eudora under M$ as well. I think definitions by example would help. Also, a M$ guru was telling me that in that world, there's a "SDI" as well as "MDI" display mode; and maybe that's what we're talking about.
Penelope is currently SDI, while Eudora is MDI. We want Penelope to be MDI as well.
If what gavin is sugesting is correct, also means the option in the settings is phrased wrongly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_document_interface may help!
Not sure about the technical stuff - SDI vs. MDI - but am sure that multiple folder windows for incoming mail is essential to keep track of your email if there's any volume to speak of. Some things you leave on the back burner for a while but they're there in front of you to remind you you need to do something with them - or perhaps in the end nothing. Is there a thread about integrating the Addressbook with Mozilla Sunbird?

This is also sort of a duplicate of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375993 but I'll leave it open. I'll modify the Summary to include 'MDI'...

Just tried to vote for this "development" but can't see that the vote was recorded. How would I confirm that? These multiple threads are horribly confusing. Thunderbird is a mess. Really not a very good email program at all. I won't recommend it to anyone, in fact, discourage them from moving here. I've heard they're hiring more staff. But that's a "heard" not a fact. I'd like to know from someone whether there's any chance of this long overdue feature being implemented in any timeframe that makes sense. I can name off the top of my head five or six other weaknesses fixing which are crucial - meaning it's still an inadequate, weak email client without those changes - but the improvement of keeping the folders receiving incoming mail open and accessible until you decide you want to close them is issue number one for me. Where do you vote? Also, it doesn't matter to me whether or not the open folders stay within the Thunderbird (or Penelope) frame. As long as they remain open until either I close Thunderbird or the folder itself. I also definitely want those folders that are still open to re-appear when Thunderbird comes back up again.
Folders *and* messages. Even if it crashes. (But also note: this bug is about Penelope, not Thunderbird. Just in case you were getting them mixed up.)

As for retaining the open windows (be they mailbox or message windows), that is something the Penelope team is currently working on (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=376511). And yes, as Gavin mentioned, Penelope (Eudora 8) and Thunderbird are not _exactly_ the same thing, though the Thunderbird folks intend to take many of the changes that we make and incorporate them into Thunderbird as well. Matt
So here we're just talking to Penelope people? Not Thunderbird? Doesn't really matter as long as something starts moving on this platform which is in rigor mortis. Really disappointed in how few, if any, of the main problems with the Thunderbird design/structure have been addressed. I'm looking for another email client, don't want to work through a browser to do email - but there's nothing out there but Outlook, a non-starter. I'd switch in a minute, pay whatever it cost to get an email client that actually worked. I'd go back to the original Qualcomm Eudora - where I was quite happy until Qualcomm bailed - but I'd have to recreate several hundred filters in Eudora after a year and a career change. Just too much overhead for a program that's never going to be developed further. So I'm stuck and not happy about it at all. It's a major issue in my professional life.

By clicking on the "Votes" link selection, I am taken to a page on which there is no place to make a vote!! Lonnie
Ditto. Tried many times now, every thing I could think of trying. The votes remains 5 for.
Works for me. You have to log in first, then the line will change to something like this: Votes: 8 (show) (vote) You need to click on the last link (vote), which takes you to a page with lots of checkboxes. One of them will be highlighted in grey with a line saying Enter New Vote Here; check the checkbox and then click the Change My Votes button.

By clicking > on the "Votes" link selection, I am taken to a page on which there is no place > to make a vote!! > > Lonnie > You don't want to click the 'Votes' link. You want to click the 'Vote' link. For example, where it (currently) says: Votes: 9 (show) (vote) You want to click the 'vote' link (the one inside the parens), NOT the one that says 'Votes:' Matt
I have upgraded to Windows 7 RTM (ie the final release, i have a Technet Plus subscription so I got it earlier than most). I have not taken the Penelope project seriously up until now because I had a version of Eudora that worked. Primarily I used the MDI interface to have multiple folder windows open at once and then I could pick and choose which e-mail I want to read. The folder list structure of Penelope is counter-intuitive to me and just the same as any other e-mail client works, eg Outlook. Lots of people complained about the lack of MDI in Penelope but I just continued using the old version because it effectively did what I wanted. However the days of Eudora 7.1 working on any OS have come to an end. I have set it to run with administrator rights which fixes a number of problems on Windows 7. However it has issues with SSL accounts (for example, my Gmail accounts). It hangs on initial check and brings processor usage to 100%. When it finally times out (mail checking fails), the processor usage drops. If I hit Ctrl+M then it successfully checks all accounts including those with SSL. I don't get why it happens, but there's little point crying about it now because the product has stopped being suppported. Now more than ever people are going to start migrating to the Penelope project, and being disappointed that it does not behave in the same way as Eudora. Are there any devleopments in the MDI area of this project? Can someone suggest anohter client that does work with MDI still? This is THE main reason I use Eudora apart from the fast searches (which are also flaky now on Win7).

I leave Eudora running so it is only a problem on initial startup. Mitch
Unfortunately, according to post #37 on bug 375993 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375993 we are never going to get a true Eudora type MDI. That's a shame. I was so excited to hear that Mozilla was going to take up Eudora. Over time I've come to question if we'd actually end up with anything resembling the classic Eudora, but held my hope. According to that post, it'll never happen. Now we can look forward to Firefox MAIL instead. That's a true shame.
I'm waiting for the true MDI interface before switching from old Eudora to this one.
I an Eudora user since 1995 and always liked the MDI interface, that's one of the big reasons why I still use Eudora 7.1 and not Thunderbird. I installed Eudora OES and I'm dissapointed of the fact it has not an MDI interface (yet?). I will also wait till Eudora OES will have the option to configure MDI.
Penelope didn't see any activity in the vcs for the last 8 years, closing.
