not perfectly clear on the exact steps of how I got there, but I was able to cause advanced search to not have any search terms.
I think the state of the window was such that search was no longer working (a known bug) and then two successive clicking on "-".
unable to reproduce
version 3.0a1pre (2008022803)

I got something that may be related to that using ssearch name PRN or LPT1:
The property window for those ss have no criteria. For more det see bug 312265 in comment 5 and capture in comment 6 attachment https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=320681

312265 may be unrelated. in that case I would guess the search window failed to populate because of the folder name. In my case, the advance search window populated and indeed worked, but then I somehow cleared the search criteria pane.
Just a guess - perhaps before clicking '-' the search button stopped working after I interrupted the imap search with "stop" (which I often do)
confirming.
