Details
Using jun12 m17 commercial build
Since we now have the ability to go to an offline state, we need to have a menu
item present in mailnews to switch states.
Please let me know whether we intend to have said menu item in mailnews
locations other than the main 3-pane mail window.

Reassigning to myself. I assume you want File | Offline > like the browser
has, but let me know where in the menu you want it.
Like in the browser, how about:
Print
---------
Offline >
---------
Quit
By virtue of the fact that it's a submenu and not simply a menu item, I assume
we plan on having the same menu structure as Nav4...namely (on win32):
Offline > Work Offline
--------------
Synchronize...
If that's the case, I'll implement the Work Offline part right away,
but "Synchronize..." will take much more work (I don't believe there's a
backend or frontend for this...do we plan on supporting it?) If that's not the
case, and we have no intention of supporting the Synchronize feature again,
then I don't know why Offline is a submenu in the browser rather than just a
menu item.
Let me know what you want me to do here.

guess I'll implement this in the browser, while I'm at it.

also just noticed that nav4 messenger has the menu items "get selected
messages" and "get flagged messages". Are these features we plan on supporting?

sorry 'bout spam from this. last thing -- I assume we need the online/offline
icon that's currently in the browser to be in the mail window statusbar also?
blake - we are not doing synchronize or any offline mail/news features. There
should not be a synchronize item.

To clarify: the "offline" isn't truly an offline feature, but a way for the user
to use the product without connecting. Is that true? If that is the case,
then "Synchronize", "Get Selected Messages" or "Get Flagged Messages" wouldn't
be necessary. So, the menu item wouldn't need to be a flyout.
File menu:
Print
-------------
Go Offline/Go Online (Toggle)
-------------
Quit
The online/offline icons that are currently in the browser should be the same
icons we use for Mail.

OK. "Get Selected Messages" and "Get Flagged Messages" are from nav4
messenger...I don't know what they're about.
Jennifer: are you sure mail should use Go Offline/Online? currently the
browser is using Work Online/Offline. Let me know if you want me to change the
browser to Go, or if you want mail to use Work (we need to stay consistent)

I'm not sure who's in charge here, but if we're not truly
supporting/implementing offline features (at least for mailnews, so I've been
told) why should we use the term "work offline" -- people may not be able to
"work" given the lack of feature support. I thing "go offline" is better -- it
is vague, but is more indicative of what we're really doing -- just letting the
user toggle offline, but not really doing any feature support in that state.

Either Go or Work is fine with me. Cc'ing Simone, our tech writer. Lets go with
whatever she recommends. And use the same wording for both Mail and Browser.
Just a thought, if we do plan to offer offline support in a future release, we
should pick the correct wording now (even if it isn't as accurate for
SeaMonkey), so it doesn't need to be changed in a later release (after
users have already seen it).

I can see your point, but I still think it's very important to convey that SOME
work IS possible -- for example, won't it still be possible for users to write
emails that then get saved in the Unsent folders, or to look at messages already
downloaded?

|

welp, I'm ready to check this in and just need a final decision on the wording
here...Work or Go?
Comment 15•25 years ago

I'd say lets go with Simone's recommendation, "Work Offline/Work Online" with
the "W" underlined. I know it may not be completely accurate now, but it will
be consistent with 4.x and won't have to be changed once there is more offline
functionality in future releases. Plus, when you startup Seamonkey and have
multiple profiles, the screen that lets you choose which profile also has a
"Work Offline" checkbox, so we should be consistent with the wording.

alright...sticking with Work, for now anyways. will check in when tree opens.

blake - any update to this? If you have a patch, get a review and approval by
going through the Mozilla review/approval process.
But, not holding Netscape PR3 for, so - per mail triage

I've added the menu items - they're not quite correctly hooked up, but the
eClient team is doing that.

commercial trunk builds: 2001051104 on WinNT 4.0,
2001051108 on Linux rh 7.0 kernel 2.2.16
2001051109 on Mac OS 9.0.4
Actual menu items (Work Offline,Download/Sync Now,Offline Settings,
Get Selected Messages, and Get Flagged messages) are present
on all 3 builds. Minor problems still exist (offline settings
currently doesn't work, can select only 1 flagged/selected message, etc..)
These bugs have been logged.
Marking verified since this bug is for generating the menu items
for offline which has been done.
