Details

On a couple of occasions I've had a hard time figuring out how to configure my client to talk to my mail hosts's SMTP server. The reason it was painful is that my DSL provider blocks port 25.

I'd like the client to help me figure out how to configure the SMTP settings without me having to change the port or security settings, and then try to send an email. That takes a while, requires me to look up the normal alternate port(s?) and keep track of which settings I've changed.

Ideally, there should be a "Automatically configure SMTP" button that figures it out for me, possibly by using trial and error.
Agreed. In general, we should probably do port sniffing as well (see what the iPhone does for a good example).

This should probably be merged (or duped) into bug 422814 where active development is happening in the account dialog
duping and clearing wanted since we're already doing that in bug 422814
