Details

When user install my extension Firefox says "Author unknown". This is false or at least not relevant.

How to prevent "author unknown" from being shown?

The author of the XPI is not "unknown". It's a person or group who took a lot of effort to create something based on Firefox.

It's not even clear to me how Firefox could every assert "author known" anyway. It would have to be a lie: software can't know.

Extension authors go to a lot of work. To get to the end and then find that every user who installed our extension has to see "Author Unknown", well how can that be good?

If you want to say "Extension is not digitally signed" fine. Everyone knows what that means. It means "digital signature are too hard and expensive for any one but a few mega corporations that sell digital signature software.
We can assert that we know who the author is if the xpi is signed.
