Steps to reproduce: 1: Create a new IMAP account, with settings for Gmail. (Do not go to Account Settings to change the port, leave it as default) 2: Go to "Customize" and drag a "Stop" button to the toolbar. 3: Click "Unsent Messages". The window should refresh as appropriate. 4: Click "Inbox" of the IMAP account you just created. The moving bar throbber should start at the bottom of the UI. Nothing else should happen since Gmail requires SSL and the default settings do not specify SSL. 5: Click the IMAP inbox name with "Read messages" and "Write a new message" page appearing, along with Accounts and Advanced Features. 6: Click Stop. You should now see Unread: -1 and Total: -1 at the bottom. Intended behaviour: It should be Unread: 0 and Total: 0.

Occurred on 10.4 Tiger, while testing Shredder Alpha 1 build 1, with build ID version 3.0a1 (2008050714).
Tiger machine was a PPC, not sure if this afflicts Intel Macs though.

I had this happen for me today. It seemed like it happened when I deleted an email from my Inbox while Tbird was receiving other mail and processing it based on my filter rules. The rule that would have been being processed just marks some messages as "read" and then moves them to a specified folder. Unlike in Gary's screenshot, my unread and total counts at the bottom of the window are correct. The incorrect counts in my situation are in the grouped date headers in the Inbox display.
