Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.open firefox
2.go to bookmarks
3.right click - choose : Sort by name
Actual Results:
nothing happens

Expected Results:
Should sort by name

on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0
* When right-clicking the menu itself, Sort by Name is grayed out. (bug)
* When right-clicking a non-places-view item and clicking Sort by Name, all items (except separators) are sorted. (expected)
* When right-clicking a (non-query) folder and clicking Sort by Name, all items (except separators) are sorted in that folder. (expected)

So, please confirm.

i had firefox 2 before and i have installed firefox 3 without unistalling the previous version of firefox.i see that this sort is not working on xp either.i have installed foxmarks bookmark synchronizer add-on.i don't know if it worked before installing the add-on.
When I run the latest nightly build with a new profile, there is no Sort By Name anymore in the menus. It was removed somewhere in April of this year. So I don't know how it still can appear in your browser, grayed out or not.
Do you see it still in safe-mode or with a new profile?

this is the print screen after i started in safe mode...as you can see i still have "sort by name" , but i don't understand why it should not appear because i consider it useful , personally i use it a lot.

I see Sort by Name too, in safe mode and in a new profile, both in RC2 and Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1a1pre) Gecko/2008060517c Minefield/3.1a1pre.

That behaviour is expected. Right-clicking on a folder now sorts the items inside it.

I think the only bug here is that when right-clicking the menu itself (for example, the padding between the border and the items), Sort by Name is disabled.
Sort by Name is only still present (and working) when you right click on folders, but not anymore on menu-items in the main bookmarks-menu. This was recently removed. See http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/9672/naamloosfo2.png
can this be added as applying to Mac OSX.4.11 FF3 the final (not RC).

I can sort bookmarks by control Clicking in the tile of a Folder on Bookmarks Bar. But will not sort any sub Folders within.

However if I go to Bookmark > organize Bookmarks I can appear to sort by name or any other sort type. But as soon as I back click button to close that window everything reverts to unsorted order.

If this need to be moved to a new bug report feel free to do so. Just give my name as submitting.
Duplicate of bug 400447.
It works for me with the latest trunk. Can you retest the bug with it?

Read my comments just posted in Bug 400447 as referenced by zigger. This explains the way I feel sort by name should work.
yes if you do Sort By Name you are sorting the bookmarks INSIDE the folder
where you opened the context menu.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
