We want to ship Firefox 3 a good list of search engines for Icelandic. We're going to work towards this in three phases. First, the localization team and Mic (Michal Berman) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Kristján, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines. For en-US, we currently use this set, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives: Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Answers, CC, eBay, Wikipedia After we decided on a particular search engine, Mic will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. undefined, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information. Once we have a specification on what the searchengines for Icelandic should look like, the localization team and Axel will work on an implementation on that. This should happen by the localization team creating and attaching patches for the desired changes, and requesting review from Axel. After a successful review, the localization team will land them. Please don't commit any modifications in l10n/is/browser/searchplugins to the cvs repository without a patch reviewed by Axel or someone else appointed by Mic. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here.
The main search engines used by Icelandairs would be: The Icelandic version of Google (This is the most popular) http://google.is And the Icelandic search engine: http://leit.is But the default en-US set is also ok.
google.is - it will redirect automatically (i believe) so we dont' need to do anything special there for leti.is - checked them out, they look like a good user experience (simple) and like the rank icelandic based results higher which is good. We can certainly add them would you suggest all en-YS defatuls + leit.is or in replacement of something? google yahoo amazon answers CC ebay wikipedia.is note i added the Icelandic version of wikipedia http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fors%C3%AD%C3%B0a
Yes I think the default en-US defaults + leit.is would be good.

OK, then we'll need permission from leit.is to include them into our build, and a specification which search paramaters they'd like us to use. Then we can move this over to implementation.
Summary: [is] Web service review for Firefox 3 for Icelandic. → [is] Search engines setup for Firefox 3 for Icelandic.
Kristjan, this patch moves over from en.wikipedia.org to is.wikipedia.org. I'm not sure if you're good with doing a review on this, but I don't want to just land the stuff without your consent.

Kristjan - I will email leit.is for permission and ask question on search parameters Pike - won't we need to have them actually do the plug-in build?
also - i recently found http://www.finna.is/ but i'm not really sure what they search?
I'd rather do the actual searchplugin on our side according to their specs.
Axel - I am ok with the is.wikipedia.org patch. Mic - I didn't know about http://finna.is. I took a look at it, The main search searches in a list of Icelandic companies, something like the yellow pages. It also has a web search which seems to be using Google. There is also http://ja.is which is the complete Icelandic phone book and yellow pages on the web. But I don't know if that would fit in with the search engines?

from comment #6, I am still awaiting a response. Kristjan, if you have any contacts there we can call please LMK so we can move this along quickly.I emailed their general information address.
Their Icelandic page lists these contact email addresses: General: leit(at)leit.is Managing director: pall(at)leit.is Marketing manager: geir(at)leit.is Project lead: kristjan(at)leit.is You might want to try emailing one of these addresses.
received permission from Kristján Örn Elíasson and from Baldur Kristinsson in an email yesterday of leit.is, parameters are ok for from=fx3
Implement plugin for leit.is, with from=fx3 parameter. Kristjan, it'd be cool if you could review this.

Marking FIXED per previous check-in. Kristjan, could you test an upcoming nightly and verify that the search engines are as laid out and work as expected? If so, change the bug resolution to VERIFIED to indicate that? Thanks.
